"Millie and Cupcake"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
I feel this story needed to be told because rats are the most misunderstood animals. They are clean, intelligent, loving, and they make great companions. Their bad reputation is completely undeserved. I love rats and all animals and I think people should not judge them so quickly. I also believe my story brings a good message to kids about taking care of a pet.

Where do you get your ideas?
Honestly, my rats inspired me to write my book. I got the idea from my own experiences with my pet rats. I also had a dream with part of my story in it and that’s when I woke up and wrote it all down.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
No, I only had trouble organizing my ideas. I knew the plot of my story; I just did not know how to place everything. I would sit in a quiet room and organize and put my story together.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
If you love writing, pursue it. Even if your book is not a success, don’t give up. I did not write my book for the money or fame even though it would be nice to become known one day.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
The Internet is a great marketing tool to reach thousands of people from all over the world. I use social networks like: Facebook, twitter, tumbler, instagram, and Flickr. I have over 100 thousand likes on my Facebook fan page. I think all of these social networks are good to get exposure for books. However, I do prefer Facebook because I know a lot of people that own rats and have kids. There is more talk about my book on Facebook.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
That is my next dream; I would love to turn my book into a cartoon series for kid’s ages 2-8 years old. I would choose unknown actors to portray my characters. I feel like the story will be fresh and the actors will not be distracting.
