How
did you become interested in writing?I developed a passion for writing at a very young age, around twelve, feeling a constant need to put thoughts on to paper. While the vehicle of writing has changed (pen & paper to typing to word processor), the thrill of writing remains as strong as ever. I started writing novels when moving to Jamaican as a young adult, where I wrote full time and pursued great adventure on this wonderful island.
Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
I had to write Madam President because it is a story that needed to be told because of the political situation in the United States. I wanted to advance a great president with a different view of what our government should be and accomplish. I have known some strong women and wanted to portray one in the most powerful position the world, one that has been denied women thus far. I felt it was very important that the president be both female and black.
If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
There is a screenplay in the works for Madam President. I picture Kerry Washington playing President Resbo in Madam President, with perhaps Joseph Gord0n-Levitt in the role the president’s Chief Of Staff JB Wellers. Somebody like Jon Hamm would make a good Director Dagger. I like Jamie Foxx in the role of Special Agent Busy and Vince Vaughn as Special Agent Kartel.
If you had to choose, who would be your author mentor?
Choosing an author mentor is difficult to narrow down, but of the dead it would be John Steinbeck or Mark Twain. Of the living, I would have to go with Ken Follett and David McCullough.
What was the hardest part about writing your book?
The hardest part of writing this book was trying to keep up with current events as they were literally happening as I wrote. Madam President mixes fiction into real life events of 2012, which demanded that great effort went into gathering facts and fact-checking.
