Author Interview with Carol Margaret Tetlow: "Out of Practice"

A Conversation with Carol Margaret Tetlow
Author of "Out of Practice"

Carol Margaret Tetlow
Featured Author
Carol Margaret Tetlow

When did you first start writing, and when did you finish your first book?
I wrote my very first novel when I was fourteen- a story about children and their ponies. When I went to medical school and first started out as a doctor, it was virtually impossible to find enough time to write, so it was not until 2007 when I started to write seriously and this novel, Out of Practice, took me about a year to complete.

From where do you get your ideas?
From work, largely. I love people. Being a family doctor gives me a unique insight into many different aspects of human nature. Every day I meet a wide range of individuals, families and personalities and other people’s lives never cease to amaze and intrigue me.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
When I started to write Out of Practice, I was quite sure that I had the plot mapped out to the end. Around about a third of the way through, the characters had developed in a way I had not expected and it became clear that what I had planned for them was not what should happen. Thus my favourite chapters would be in the middle third, where my characters took over and wrote the book themselves.

What project are you working on now?
Out of Practice is the first in a series of four novels, all based in the same family practice. The protagonist in each is a different doctor. While I have since written two stand alone novels, I’m now re-visiting the original series and planning the fifth novel.

What is the message behind your stories?
I want to write a good story, full of unexpected twists and characters who evoke a multitude of emotions. Stories that readers can become immersed in.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?
Yes, of course. Sometimes it can be overcome by a long walk with the dogs, other times I find it’s best to leave writing completely for a few days and then come back, full of fresh ideas.

Do you see writing as a career?
When I started out I didn’t. Now that I’m spending less time working as a doctor, I would love to embark on a new career of writing. I’m a very focussed individual who relishes a challenge. Who said that dreams can’t come true?

How did you find your current publisher, and what experience do you get from that?
For the cynics who do not believe in miracles, think again. I put my series of four novels on a webiste called PublishersDesk.com, a platform for showing your work to many publishers and literary agents, world wide. I cannot express my gratitude to Guy Boulianne and Editions Dedicaces for finding me and giving me this opportunity.

What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I was always encouraged to read. With a demanding job, I like to be able to escape from work pressures so I love books that transport me somewhere different. My favourite authors are EF Benson (particularly the Mapp and Lucia series), Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Jane Green to name but a few.

What advice would you give to aspiring writer?
This is easy and I make no apologies for repeating what many will have said before. Firstly, write about something you know. Secondly, never, ever give up. Believe in yourself and your book and keep trying.

***THIS BOOK IS TEMPORARILY MARKED DOWN TO 99-CENTS***

Love small-town romance with an unforgettable cast of characters?

The Due South series will transport you to an unspoilt, wild island off the coast of New Zealand.

Meet Piper and West...

She vowed never to return.
To save her brother from financial ruin, Piper Harland must do the one thing she swore she'd never do—return to the tiny island hometown where Ryan "West" Westlake crushed her heart. Piper is tough, resilient and a little wild—much like the remote and beautiful Stewart Island where she grew up. As a cop who's part of the elite New Zealand Police National Dive Squad, bringing the dead back to their families still doesn't stop the guilt she feels over her father's drowning death. Now nine years later she's obligated to return to a hostile community as the outsider, and forced to work with the man who was once her best friend and first lover.

She's a risk he can't take.
West is an Island man, through and through. As owner of the local pub, he lives and breathes the local community, and sure as hell can't imagine living anywhere else. But most of all he refuses to ever fall for a woman like his flighty mother. He lost Piper once to give her the chance to fulfil her dreams of becoming a cop. But now she's back for an unexpected six week visit to help her brother—his best mate. Maybe West wants her a little bit, maybe he can't resist the temptation to tease and touch her, but can he fall in love with such a flight risk?

Saying goodbye for the second time might just destroy them both.

Fresh...Seductive...Heart-warming...
And enough steaminess to make your toes curl!
Intended for mature 18+ aged readers.

Dead Couple Walking: How can a love so wrong be so right? by Lawrence Ambrose

Dead Couple Walking
***KINDLE COUNTDOWN STARTS JUNE 10, 2014***

From Canada with Love?

Janice Carlson and Steven Sorenson seem perfect for each other – aside from living in different countries and still being in love with their former spouses who desperately want them back.

In the U,S., Steven Sorenson is struggling to recover from his ex-wife's affair. A conservative investment counselor by day, by night Steven combs through online dating sites searching for Ms. Right. His dates have included women who claimed to be slim while being obese, single while being married, and against drug-use but showing up drunk.

In Manitoba, Canada, Janice Carlson recently discovered that her husband was having an affair with a co-worker. Her husband, Jordan, informs her that he doesn't feel a strong connection any longer and wants "the chance to be with someone who makes me happy." He proceeds to force Janice to sell her beloved house and move to an apartment where her neighbors include two men and one woman who perform orgiastic sex and play "ghoul metal" 24/7.

On one of his online dating searches, Steven encounters Jan's profile, "Sweet Syntax," and is instantly intrigued: "I have a master's degree in English!" she warns. He writes her, she writes back – and thus begins a correspondence which soon has Steven convinced that he's found the woman of his dreams.

When Steven and Janice finally meet, their sexual fireworks and emotional connection exceed their highest expectations. To Steven, Janice is funny, bright, and quirky, and the only woman who's ever called him a "stud." For Janice, Steven is the strong, kind, and sane man that her husband, Jordan, never was.

Jordan's love affair, however, has crashed and burned. Now he has decided that Janis is his "one and only true love," and he wants her back. The owner of four degrees and a 157 I.Q., Jordan turns his brilliant, devious mind to destroying Janice and Steven's blossoming love.

Meanwhile, back in the States, Steven's wife, Zelena, has ex-lover issues of her own. Her passionate affair has flamed out, and her former love has turned obsessive stalker. A cry for help brings Steven firmly back into Zel's orbit, and she aims to keep him there.

With Zel and Jordan working overtime to win back their former mates, and Jan's manipulative best friend, Corryn, plotting to ruin both relationships and keep Jan all to herself, an incident at the border jeopardizes Steven's future passage into Canada.

Battling former lovers, immigration authorities, the police, back-stabbing friends - and their own consciences - Janice and Steven form a pact to make their new love triumph, no matter what the cost.

About the Author
Lawrence Ambrose
For me, writing is the best way to explore and express everything that I love about life. I have a lot of interests - philosophy, psychology, science, art, music, and all forms of fiction - so my writing is fairly eclectic. I am as comfortable writing an essay about the dangers of logic as I am creating a fantasy world where the granddaughter of a god wreaks havoc in a small town. My best stories, I think, combine the above interests in a seamless (or perhaps unseemly) whole.

My characters are my babies. I can't seem to stop myself from loving them - even the evil ones. I'm a laissez-faire god: I create them, and then let them play, except for an occasional time-out.

My stories aim to provoke thought, and to challenge your (and my) beliefs, while having a good time. I prefer my fictional intellectual meals to include generous servings of fast-paced adventure. I aim to blow my mind - and yours. Please join me on my "fantastic journey." :)

"If you enjoy a Twilight Zone type of story this one is for you."

John is sliding into depression and alcoholism from his grief over the death of his wife. Now the mysterious discovery of his grandfather's pipe has made matters worse. He's seeing her in a downtown D.C. park. John is torn between wild hopes that he might have some way to reconnect with Jillian and his concern that it's all a delusion.

Meanwhile, a dangerous old man with obscure family connections is trying to interfere, and the more John investigates the deeper his illness becomes. His psychologist is getting increasingly concerned about his mental state, and when someone reports him as a "national security threat" for his increasingly odd behavior, John faces the prospect of being involuntarily drugged or committed.

Can he find the secret of the pipe, and of his dreams, before he goes mad? Will he find a way to let go of Jillian, or ... is it possible he might even find her?

Big Phil's Kid, by M.M. Parker

A touching, hilarious rebuttal of the theory that all novels of adolescents are basically the same. Nothing is the same when the scene just sophisticated New York and Palm Beach and the young hero suddenly realizes that the chauffeur is really a bodyguard and that his big businessman father's big money come from big rackets. Lovable gangsters, an Italian mother who spends hours cooking inedible dinners, and a girl next-door who makes the first move are not stereotypes. Indeed, nothing about this novel is predictable, except that it will make anyone who was ever young laugh, and perhaps cry.

16-year-old Larry Carrett is actually no different from any other average American boy, except that he lives in a townhouse in New York, has a mansion in Palm Beach, and drives to college in a bulletproof Cadillac. And, until the day when his uncle Angelo is gunned down in a barbershop, Larry is unaware that his family is “not quite respectable."

When the newspapers reveal the unsavory details, Larry has a hard time defending his new identity to his friends, his girl, and especially to himself. Big Phil's Kid is the hilarious, bittersweet story of how he copes with this unusual situation.

"You'll probably get an immense kick out of Big Phil's Kid...finding one of Holden's (Caulfield of Catcher in the Rye) more articulate and amusing successors is a treat." -Publisher's Weekly

"Mr. Parker is very funny...Altogether, an unexpected delight." -The New York Times

"Read this book - even if you don't have the time." -Best Sellers

"Laugh/cry out loud immediacy, honesty and raunch which will appeal" -VOYA

"Fast-paced, well-written...funny!" -The Denver Post

"Hard to put down, difficult to forget." -Pensacola News Journal

About the Author
Ayn Bootham
Ayn Bootham is an American journalist and writer.

Named after the famous American/Russian author Ayn Rand, Ayn for many years avoided having anything to do with writing. Who needs the pressure, right? But she sucked at everything else - from managing a garden centre to attempting to sell cosmetics. She wasn't great at being a wife either.

So she gave up. She now writes. At night mostly, when her 11-year-old son is asleep. Oh, and they live in a loft conversion in New York. She regularly uses the services of a Russian handyman, on whom the character of Goran, in her book, The Cleaning Agency, is very loosely based. Very, very loosely.

Last Light Falling: The Covenant, Book I, by J.E. Plemons

Last Light Falling: The Covenant, Book I, by J.E. Plemons
If your fate has already been chosen for you, would you change it? Fifteen-year-old Arena Power blindly accepts her destiny in a world filled with tragedy, chaos, and a lingering wickedness that will tempt every man's soul until the last days on Earth. Set in the United States in the year 2053, America, like most of the world, has undergone catastrophic earthquakes, famine, and an economic collapse, which has rendered the nation hopeless. It has turned to other nations, like Russia and China, to help restore what was once a world power. Unfortunately, the new America has grossly caused civil unrest that will eventually be the precursor to a much bigger war of biblical proportions.

Orphaned at the age of nine, Arena and her twin brother, Gabe, have learned to rely on each other through the toughest times. Not only do they share the same birthday and the tragic loss of their parents, they both have a birthmark on the back of their necks in the shape of a crucifix. This is only but a small sign of the destiny that will follow. On their fifteenth birthday, they receive a mystery letter and key from their estranged Uncle Finnegan. This key will unlock their fate, and it will be up to a priest, who has vowed to protect them since birth, to unfold the layers of their destiny-to undo the evil that has spoiled the world, and to help unleash God's wrath upon those who have turned from Him in the last days of history.

Last Light Falling weaves righteousness with evil, treachery with truth, and shows just how far the will of man can survive on faith alone. Arena and Gabriel's fate will determine that course of history for which has already been written. They were not born to save the world; they were chosen to prepare it for the final days.

Mind If I Come In

But what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay there — especially when it comes to the supernatural. Even back in Houston, trouble still haunts her.

After agreeing to try to help the coma-stricken daughter of a mob boss, Kat discovers the assault that placed the poor girl in the hospital was only the beginning. Aided by her amnesic vampire housemate, a former Vegas detective, a spunky turtle, and a man who may or may not have a neck, Kat vows to discover who is behind it all … before she becomes the next victim.

About the Author
K.L. Phelps never wanted to be a cop, fireman or baseball player. He fell in love with books at a very early age and (aside from the summer of 1977 when he wanted to be Luke Skywalker) he never wanted to be anything other than a writer. Somehow he took a left when he should have gone right (or write) and spent 17+ years as an oncology nurse. He is now back to pursuing his childhood dream. Thriller, suspense, mysteries, paranormal, humor/comedy, there are very few genres that don't interest him and he intends to take a crack at them all.

Her Wicked Sin (Entangled Scandalous), by Sarah Ballance

Her Wicked Sin, by Sarah Ballance
On a moonless night, he rides into the winter forest on his beast as black as midnight...

Dashing stranger, Henry Dunham, comes to Salem on a mysterious errand, but is thrown from his horse in the dead of night and rescued by the local Puritan midwife, Lydia Colson.

Haunted by her past, Lydia is running from her own dark secrets, avoiding intrusive questions by pretending her dead husband is simply... away. But when she and Henry are caught in a compromising situation, one punishable by Puritan law, he saves her from scandal by claiming to be her errant spouse... and claiming her bed.

Forced to fake a marriage, Lydia and Henry find their passion overwhelming and their vows a little too real. As their lies become truths, a witch hunt closes in on Lydia, threatening not only their burgeoning love, but her life.

About the Author
Sarah Ballance
Sarah and her husband of what he calls "many long, long years" live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they're asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren't much better than the kids). When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or seeking that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her.

She loves creating unforgettable stories while putting her characters through an unkind amount of torture--a hobby that has nothing to do with living with six children. (Really.) Though she adores nail-biting mystery and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Sarah writes in many genres including contemporary and ghostly paranormal romance. Her ever-growing roster of releases may be found on her website at sarahballance.com.
