Author Interview with Carol Margaret Tetlow: "Out of Practice"

A Conversation with Carol Margaret Tetlow
Author of "Out of Practice"

Carol Margaret Tetlow
Featured Author
Carol Margaret Tetlow

When did you first start writing, and when did you finish your first book?
I wrote my very first novel when I was fourteen- a story about children and their ponies. When I went to medical school and first started out as a doctor, it was virtually impossible to find enough time to write, so it was not until 2007 when I started to write seriously and this novel, Out of Practice, took me about a year to complete.

From where do you get your ideas?
From work, largely. I love people. Being a family doctor gives me a unique insight into many different aspects of human nature. Every day I meet a wide range of individuals, families and personalities and other people’s lives never cease to amaze and intrigue me.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
When I started to write Out of Practice, I was quite sure that I had the plot mapped out to the end. Around about a third of the way through, the characters had developed in a way I had not expected and it became clear that what I had planned for them was not what should happen. Thus my favourite chapters would be in the middle third, where my characters took over and wrote the book themselves.

What project are you working on now?
Out of Practice is the first in a series of four novels, all based in the same family practice. The protagonist in each is a different doctor. While I have since written two stand alone novels, I’m now re-visiting the original series and planning the fifth novel.

What is the message behind your stories?
I want to write a good story, full of unexpected twists and characters who evoke a multitude of emotions. Stories that readers can become immersed in.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?
Yes, of course. Sometimes it can be overcome by a long walk with the dogs, other times I find it’s best to leave writing completely for a few days and then come back, full of fresh ideas.

Do you see writing as a career?
When I started out I didn’t. Now that I’m spending less time working as a doctor, I would love to embark on a new career of writing. I’m a very focussed individual who relishes a challenge. Who said that dreams can’t come true?

How did you find your current publisher, and what experience do you get from that?
For the cynics who do not believe in miracles, think again. I put my series of four novels on a webiste called PublishersDesk.com, a platform for showing your work to many publishers and literary agents, world wide. I cannot express my gratitude to Guy Boulianne and Editions Dedicaces for finding me and giving me this opportunity.

What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I was always encouraged to read. With a demanding job, I like to be able to escape from work pressures so I love books that transport me somewhere different. My favourite authors are EF Benson (particularly the Mapp and Lucia series), Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Jane Green to name but a few.

What advice would you give to aspiring writer?
This is easy and I make no apologies for repeating what many will have said before. Firstly, write about something you know. Secondly, never, ever give up. Believe in yourself and your book and keep trying.

In Too Deep by Tracey Alvarez
***THIS BOOK IS TEMPORARILY MARKED DOWN TO 99-CENTS***

Love small-town romance with an unforgettable cast of characters?

The Due South series will transport you to an unspoilt, wild island off the coast of New Zealand.

Meet Piper and West...

She vowed never to return.
To save her brother from financial ruin, Piper Harland must do the one thing she swore she'd never do—return to the tiny island hometown where Ryan "West" Westlake crushed her heart. Piper is tough, resilient and a little wild—much like the remote and beautiful Stewart Island where she grew up. As a cop who's part of the elite New Zealand Police National Dive Squad, bringing the dead back to their families still doesn't stop the guilt she feels over her father's drowning death. Now nine years later she's obligated to return to a hostile community as the outsider, and forced to work with the man who was once her best friend and first lover.

She's a risk he can't take.
West is an Island man, through and through. As owner of the local pub, he lives and breathes the local community, and sure as hell can't imagine living anywhere else. But most of all he refuses to ever fall for a woman like his flighty mother. He lost Piper once to give her the chance to fulfil her dreams of becoming a cop. But now she's back for an unexpected six week visit to help her brother—his best mate. Maybe West wants her a little bit, maybe he can't resist the temptation to tease and touch her, but can he fall in love with such a flight risk?

Saying goodbye for the second time might just destroy them both.

Fresh...Seductive...Heart-warming...
And enough steaminess to make your toes curl!
Intended for mature 18+ aged readers.

*****

About the Author
Kee Patterbee
Kee Patterbee (KeePatterbee.com) spent the early years of her life working at the hardest career in the world. She was a mother. Then she embarked on a second career as a grandmother. Along the way, she dabbled in writing, most often in short stories. In 2013, Kee decided to do something she had always dreamed of doing. She began work on her first novel. That book is The Chef at the Water's Edge. Here, she created the character of Hannah Starvling. Her protagonist is a former FBI turned culinary consultant, now semi-amateur sleuth.

Since that time she's written three more Hannah novels and one novella as part of the ongoing Twilight Mystery Series. Plans are in the work for many more.

Kee grew up in a small southern town. It was there that her love of slow paced communities, their residents, and the dark underbelly they often hide was born. When she was a little girl, she loved reading old world myths. Her favorite was the Roman god Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings and transitions. Her fascination lay with his association with gates, doors, passages, endings and time, and the future and to the past. Kee remembers riding her bike through her neighborhood, contemplating the Janus story. She then applied it to her town. She often wondered what went on behind the gates leading to facade of the many little wood frame houses. What did the townsfolk do behind those closed doors when no one was looking? Thus, most of her stories and adventures are set in or around the sleepy riverside town of Twilight. The town is a Norman Rockwell picturesque by day. By night, it is illuminated by shadows.

Kee is southern through and through. She married a man of similar origins. He shares her fascination with the unseen, both real and imagined. They now live in Georgia where they lead a quiet existence of writing and enjoying life in general. One of the things they love is seeking out and visiting 'roadside' attractions. Those places that offer a look into the more unusual aspects of America. They also are in search of the perfect chicken wing and chili cheese dog. In the summer they exist between writing and these adventures.

Kee and her husband Joe, are great lovers of animals. They share their house with two Yorkies, Zippy and Doodles, and a tuxedo cat named CTO, which stands for Chinese Take Out.

About the Author
Barbara Fox I was born in Chicago, moved to Washington DC and now live a vacation life in Miami Beach, Fl. I write and act in murder mystery plays for Mystery On The Menu, an interactive theater company I started in 1986. I became so attached to some of the characters I created for the shows that I decided to put them into books, "Murder In The Inn", "Another Murder In The Inn" (set in DC) and "Murder Is Served", a collection of short stories readers can try to solve before reading the solution.

Right now I'm working on "Murder In Another Inn" (this isn't a lack of imagination, I just moved my characters to Florida) and several short stories which will take place in or near or around the inn.

My most current book is "Widowpedia",(a little information about internet dating and other matters for women in Act Two); it's a a sort of fictionalized version of my life after I became a widow.

When I'm not writing I spend my time acting in One woman murder mysteries, writing and re-vising scripts, line dancing, swimming and people watching on the Hollywood Broadwalk and Lincoln Road.

Unbreakable: The Story Of The Unrelenting Spirit Of Katherine Symthe, by Katherine Svoi Symthe

Unbreakable: The Story Of The Unrelenting Spirit Of Katherine Symthe
"Unbreakable: The Unrelenting Spirit of Katherine Svoi Symthe" is a terrifying, enthralling and soul-shaking read that just might change you for life. Katherine Symthe grew up in horror that most of us could not comprehend even a fragment of: sold for sex as a child, abused in every way imaginable by her family, and living in squalor and adjacent to animal abuse from birth. Now, as an adult, she recounts the process of dealing with those memories and how that childhood trauma continues to affect her relationships later in life.

Any survivor of abuse will be able to relate to Katherine's experiences: your life and attempts at romance will forever be impacted by sexual abuse, because it changes the connotations of sex in one's mind. It's brave of Symthe to relay the parts of her relationship that, once it's over, even those of us who aren't so damaged like to "edit" out. Have you ever noticed in movies how no one's family supports the "wrong" relationship, how you never embarrass yourself for the one who doesn't end up being "the one"? Those things - the things we all leave out when we tell the stories of past loves that didn't work out - Katherine leaves in. With this, she adds depth to our empathy for her and the ultimate pain and betrayal she experiences at the hands of others. Unbreakable is 49 shades of Red in Katherine Symthe, a victim now survivor, a veteran, now a thriver.

About the Author
Katherine Svoi Symthe is an experienced corporate executive with over 20 years' experience in Management and Operations. She received her A. A. in Dance, B.A in Theatre Management, over 20 certifications in Mental Health, Life Coaching, and Psychology along with a B.A in Education, and Psychology. In 2012, Symthe legally changed her forged birth certificate name, that the traffickers had given her to her pen name Katherine Svoi Symthe. She was bought for $500.00 from San Antonio in or around 1972. In 2008 Symthe returned back to San Antonio, Texas: her true home.

The name change allowed Symthe to reclaim her life and Voice. Today, Symthe owns House of SVOI, Inc. and Healing Survivors, Creating Thrivers Foundation that is leading the movement to education, awareness and eradication of abuse, and human trafficking. Healing Survivors, Creating Thrivers enables victims/survivors/thrivers to have a global voice by drawing a line in the sand and taking a stand. It's time to take back our cities starting with San Antonio, Texas in 2014.

The Little Girl, by Thatcher C. Nalley

“Why does God make bad people?”

Little Molly had asked this often. Therapist Lindy Wellbrook never answered. Yet if the counselor would have just answered, even in just the simplest of terms, could it have prevented the little girl from suddenly jumping to her death? Lindy could deliberate this over and over, but as she was about to find there was would be no easy answer.

The little girl Molly sees her world as being the princess in The Land of Pretty, that she has the power to communicate with dolls, and that her friend Pen protects her though no one can see him.

Lindy sees Molly’s world as delusions created from a traumatic childhood.

Only one of them is right.

Lindy Wellbrook is a new therapist hungry for the challenge to get clients through a speedy recovery. She has no time for those who sit in self-pity. Her approach is to get clients up and on with their lives in the quickest time possible. No matter how deep the wound. Then Molly walked in. Eager to prove that her theories of recovery are accurate, even with traumatic cases, Lindy takes on the troubled 8 year old Molly. Having no idea what she is about to take on. In the easy first steps Lindy quickly first finds herself in the bizarre imaginary world called “Pretty” and that Molly is convinced she can talk to dolls. But when Molly’s volatile split personality Pen surfaces, the therapy turns fierce for he will stop at nothing to sabotage the little girl’s recovery. However, Lindy will stop at nothing to get Molly through a fast track of recovery, not even Pen.

Things take a drastic change when Molly suddenly jumps to her death and Lindy is left baffled in wondering where the sessions had gone tragically wrong. In an obsession to find out the therapist relives the past therapy sessions through recorded tapes. This time when Lindy listens her outlook on Molly’s horrific childhood takes a whole different direction. Each tape brings a new twist and turns everything Lindy thought she knew about Molly, Pen, The Land of Pretty, and even herself upside down. Your Turn, by Melodie Holman

Women supporting women for health and wellness

Be a part of building relationships focused on your health and wellness goals.

This is a free ebook if you Take The Pledge on the front page of the website www.yourturnwomen.org

About the Author
Hi!! My name is Melodie Holman and I am the co-founder of Your Turn. In October of 2009 I stood on the scale at my doctor’s office and told myself I was fat. I am the mother of five children and over the last two and a half years I lost 100-pounds, ran a marathon, and started a woman’s movement. I also lost our home to foreclosure during the Great Recession. Your Turn was created in the fall of 2011 when myself and Dawn Marciniak found ourselves looking at each other in the locker room of our local YMCA saying “This is what I want to do.” Turns out, we both wanted to do the same thing. For about a year, the two of us along with 2 other wonderful women worked together as a “tribe” to reach our running goals. Dawn and I ran our first marathon in the spring that year and I think we are still on the runners high !!!!!

We experienced first hand the power of women working together toward health and fitness goals and we are building an organization that provides support. It’s just that simple. It’s just that powerful. We grieve the statistics about obesity around the world – it hits us right in our gut because we know the struggles first hand. But our grief has the hope of women and mothers who can turn this crisis around. We know this with every fiber of our “evolving to health and wellness” minds and bodies.

Kindle Spotlight: Wisdom Unsung: Historic Proof that Women are the World's Best Leaders, by Sara Bartlett

The Feminine Mistake

Writer/historian Sara Bartlett, in this series of three books, tackles the fear or dangerous disinterest that women have of fighting for leadership positions in their lives. In the first book, she proves that history is full of women leaders going all the way back to cave women days on up to the 15th century.

She shows, through humor and historical accounts, how women and girls from all walks of life stepped up to become significant leaders in many, many ways despite really harrowing circumstances. No one in today’s corporate world is asking a woman on her way up to cut off one of her breasts like the ancient Amazons. No one is forced to suffer the bone fracturing rack like preacher Anne Askew had to do. Today’s woman does not have to fear being burned as a witch for her beliefs. If they can survive that, why is 50 percent of the population so afraid?

Some reasons for this fear are valid. Some are not, and Bartlett is a cheerleader for facing those fears and coming forward anyway. She breaks down how leadership is defined through seven pillars of what we should be looking for in a successful leader, and none of them involves holding a title of any kind.

She rings the alarm bells for the disappearance of women in decisions of world peace, as opposed to the stampeding military industrial complex, in education as opposed to No Child Left Behind, and in politics where personal decisions about their bodies are still determined by men.

The second book tells of the valiant women of the 19th century, particularly the Civil War, that created unlikely women heroes on the battlefield, in medicine, in politics, and so much more. The third book brings us to the 20th and 21st centuries with a plea to recognize the brilliant women leaders of all ages.
