-----

J. Paul Roe's premier novella on Amazon.com explores the most frightening aspects of growing up human. A dark past full of abusive parents, loneliness, teenage angst and unbridled violence haunt the protagonist as he struggles to defeat the demon that he, himself, empowered. Touching on true-to-life topics from the pagan origins of Christmas to the dull, selfish commercialism of modern holidays, this story grabs hold and doesn't let go of you until the end!

About the Author
J. Paul Roe
J. Paul Roe was born in Miami, Florida. He started writing at a very young age, making hand-bound books with crayon and typing paper. His parents were proud of his curiosity and creativity, and would often find him looking up words in the dictionary well before his first year in public school.

His early literary inspirations came about while Roe was in elementary school. He began reading Michael Crichton novels obsessively after being caught up in the "Jurassic Park" craze. It was during this time that he also discovered Edgar Allen Poe, whose works had managed to not only survive through the years, but permeate many forms of modern media from film to Saturday-morning cartoons.

His formal writing experience stretches back to high school, where he served as the editor for the school newspaper for four years. It was during this time that he was introduced to the writing of Ernest Hemingway, and quickly found a role model that would inspire him for the rest of his life. After graduating, he served in the Marine Corps, and was discharged honorably due to injuries sustained while serving. He then continued onto college, where he studied psychology and philosophy and developed a passionate drive to seek a better understanding of the human condition.

In the spirit of Hemingway, Roe has always pursued an "interesting life." He believes that there's more value to experience than to material gain or worldly success, and has often been heard saying, "what's the point of living a life that wouldn't make a good movie? When people see my story played out, I don't want them falling asleep."

Meet James: A secret agent trapped inside the dire confines of the Mayview Hospital, a mental health facility, on a mission to liberate the prisoners of this institution. Only one thing stands between James and his freedom, his sanity. James is a paranoid schizophrenic, although this truth often eludes him, especially when the voices call to him in the form of a mysterious and dangerous woman he calls Eve. As he struggles on his road to redemption James must learn to confront his past in order to better accept and control his illness.

On this journey he meets Emily, a woman who will change life as he knows it. As James and Emily grow closer together James is forced to make a decision to either continue with his treatment or be with the woman he's come to love. What James must understand is Emily has her own dark secrets and that love does not always conquer all.

"Held Hostage" is a story about mental illness and the sometimes deathly hold it has on its unwilling captors.

It's a story about life, loss and the friendships in between.

But mostly, it's a story about love.

“The writing style was absolutely superb, well edited and frankly just amazingly written that will capture the imagination from the very start.” ~Alexander

Lindy could deliberate this over and over, but as she was about to find there was would be no easy answer.

The little girl Molly sees her world as being the princess in The Land of Pretty, that she has the power to communicate with dolls, and that her friend Pen protects her though no one can see him.

About the Author
I was born in the West Midlands. The eldest son of an English father and a German mother. From a very early age I was encouraged to read, and did so avidly from the age of four or five. My hero's as a teenager were MacLean, Innes, Bagley, and Wilbur Smith. Later I discovered Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Ken Follett and others. My greatest wish was to someday emulate these illustrious authors. However, as with everything in life, I had to earn a living, and had a family, which meant any aspirations I had to write, had to be put on the back burner.

As time passed, my family grew up and flew the nest. This and a redundancy/early retirement allowed me more time to devote to my dream of writing a novel.

Over the years since then, I have written about twelve novels mainly for my own pleasure. My main interest is in the ordinary man in the street put in extraordinary situations, fighting against all odds to get what he wants. My genre would fall under Thriller,/Suspense,/Psychological/Mystery.

I now use the pen name Peter Martin. This is my alter ego, for when I'm writing rather than at my day job.

Kindle Spotlight: "Charisma," by Barbara Hall

"Charisma"
By, Barbara Hall

Haunted by visions and voices for most of her life, Sarah Lange manages to shut them out, until a violent incident and near death experience shatter her earthly existence. She is plagued by heavenly voices and dogged by a desire to return "home". Frightened by her desire to terminate her existence on earth, she checks into a trauma center in Malibu, California and meets Dr. David Sutton, an intellectual, a scientist, a reductionist, someone who believes in nothing beyond his immediate experience. David’s world is as divorced from mystery and magic as Sarah’s is alive and animated by it.

Their sessions open up a dialogue about the separation of worlds—one easily defined and explained and one unknowable and waiting on some other side of human experience.

David, worn down by a mean spirited and demanding family, has grown disillusioned in his work as a therapist while Sarah has come to feel liberated by her impulse to escape all worldly demands. Even as his faith in his profession leaks away, David struggles to bring his disturbed patient back into the rules of the real world.

The sessions between the two evolve into an exploration of what it takes to exist in the world, the courage required to confront life on its own terms, and the even greater courage it takes to deny the constrictions of life.

In a desperate effort to define herself, Sarah "escapes", putting her own life as well as the life of a fellow trauma patient at risk and David must decide how far he is willing to go to save a patient and ultimately himself.
