Author Interview with Carol Margaret Tetlow: "Out of Practice"

A Conversation with Carol Margaret Tetlow
Author of "Out of Practice"

Carol Margaret Tetlow
Featured Author
Carol Margaret Tetlow

When did you first start writing, and when did you finish your first book?
I wrote my very first novel when I was fourteen- a story about children and their ponies. When I went to medical school and first started out as a doctor, it was virtually impossible to find enough time to write, so it was not until 2007 when I started to write seriously and this novel, Out of Practice, took me about a year to complete.

From where do you get your ideas?
From work, largely. I love people. Being a family doctor gives me a unique insight into many different aspects of human nature. Every day I meet a wide range of individuals, families and personalities and other people’s lives never cease to amaze and intrigue me.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
When I started to write Out of Practice, I was quite sure that I had the plot mapped out to the end. Around about a third of the way through, the characters had developed in a way I had not expected and it became clear that what I had planned for them was not what should happen. Thus my favourite chapters would be in the middle third, where my characters took over and wrote the book themselves.

What project are you working on now?
Out of Practice is the first in a series of four novels, all based in the same family practice. The protagonist in each is a different doctor. While I have since written two stand alone novels, I’m now re-visiting the original series and planning the fifth novel.

What is the message behind your stories?
I want to write a good story, full of unexpected twists and characters who evoke a multitude of emotions. Stories that readers can become immersed in.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?
Yes, of course. Sometimes it can be overcome by a long walk with the dogs, other times I find it’s best to leave writing completely for a few days and then come back, full of fresh ideas.

Do you see writing as a career?
When I started out I didn’t. Now that I’m spending less time working as a doctor, I would love to embark on a new career of writing. I’m a very focussed individual who relishes a challenge. Who said that dreams can’t come true?

How did you find your current publisher, and what experience do you get from that?
For the cynics who do not believe in miracles, think again. I put my series of four novels on a webiste called PublishersDesk.com, a platform for showing your work to many publishers and literary agents, world wide. I cannot express my gratitude to Guy Boulianne and Editions Dedicaces for finding me and giving me this opportunity.

What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I was always encouraged to read. With a demanding job, I like to be able to escape from work pressures so I love books that transport me somewhere different. My favourite authors are EF Benson (particularly the Mapp and Lucia series), Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Jane Green to name but a few.

What advice would you give to aspiring writer?
This is easy and I make no apologies for repeating what many will have said before. Firstly, write about something you know. Secondly, never, ever give up. Believe in yourself and your book and keep trying.

In Too Deep by Tracey Alvarez
***THIS BOOK IS TEMPORARILY MARKED DOWN TO 99-CENTS***

Love small-town romance with an unforgettable cast of characters?

The Due South series will transport you to an unspoilt, wild island off the coast of New Zealand.

Meet Piper and West...

She vowed never to return.
To save her brother from financial ruin, Piper Harland must do the one thing she swore she'd never do—return to the tiny island hometown where Ryan "West" Westlake crushed her heart. Piper is tough, resilient and a little wild—much like the remote and beautiful Stewart Island where she grew up. As a cop who's part of the elite New Zealand Police National Dive Squad, bringing the dead back to their families still doesn't stop the guilt she feels over her father's drowning death. Now nine years later she's obligated to return to a hostile community as the outsider, and forced to work with the man who was once her best friend and first lover.

She's a risk he can't take.
West is an Island man, through and through. As owner of the local pub, he lives and breathes the local community, and sure as hell can't imagine living anywhere else. But most of all he refuses to ever fall for a woman like his flighty mother. He lost Piper once to give her the chance to fulfil her dreams of becoming a cop. But now she's back for an unexpected six week visit to help her brother—his best mate. Maybe West wants her a little bit, maybe he can't resist the temptation to tease and touch her, but can he fall in love with such a flight risk?

Saying goodbye for the second time might just destroy them both.

Fresh...Seductive...Heart-warming...
And enough steaminess to make your toes curl!
Intended for mature 18+ aged readers.

To Protect & Serve

The Courage Series, Book 1

*~* Excerpt *~*

It was like a whole sleeping system snapped awake around Lisa. People she had no idea where they had come from were suddenly running in every direction at once.

"Sorry, Ms. Matheson, we're going to have to do this some other time," Captain Hayes said, but she was too stunned to do more than nod.

Men, gear, boots, equipment, and then just as the truck roared to life, the last fireman in full gear flashed by her and jumped into the back door. All the air vanished from the earth itself when he slammed that door closed. The blaring continued above her, but she hardly heard it as her eyes blurred against the sight. Slowly the truck pulled out into the street, leaving her standing alone in the empty station house.

"Oh, God, please, let him be all right."

Lindy could deliberate this over and over, but as she was about to find there was would be no easy answer.

The little girl Molly sees her world as being the princess in The Land of Pretty, that she has the power to communicate with dolls, and that her friend Pen protects her though no one can see him.

Vampire Assassin (Jane #1), by Samantha Warren

"More please."

All vampires deal with their immortality different. "Jane" is a series that chronicles the life (and death) of Jane, a young woman who became a vampire through less than desirable circumstances. After which, she decides to make her extra pointy teeth work in her favor.

These are serial novellas, similar to what you may find in a fantasy magazine. In this 15,000 word installment, Jane takes you with her on one of her jobs and through the intriguing tale about how she became immortal.

About the Author
Samantha Warren is a fantasy and science fiction author who spends her days immersed in dragons, spaceships, and vampires. In the name of research, she enlisted the help of her pet dragon Anethesis and together they built a ark-like spaceship. Three trips through a hole in the time-space continuum allowed the pair to explore the universe decades into the past and eons into the future. They discovered how life would be without Earth and were forced to run from alien law enforcement when their ship was deemed unspaceworthy. In the long run, the constant space repairs cut into Samantha's sock fetish fund, so she sold her ark for half-price to a slimy creature that made Jabba the Hutt look like Brad Pitt.

After her years of traveling, she returned to her roots. When she isn't writing or reading, she is milking cows or trying to feed them Pop-Tarts and FiberOne bars (they like neither). She also spends her spare time collecting zombie gnomes, drinking lattes at the Village Cafe, or watching any show featuring Gordon Ramsay. Anethesis remains by her side, sleeping away the day and hunting evil cat-eating coyotes by night.

The Kittens, by Allison Angel

The Kittens: Author Allison Angel Shuns ’50 Shades’; Urging Women to Take Charge of Desires through Breakthrough Erotic Fiction.

Angel’s raunchy yet wholly unique narrative retains the kink that audiences desire, while depicting strong and independent women who are not afraid to dominate both their partners and their fantasies. This refreshing take on the erotica genre is poised to resonate with open-minded readers from coast to coast.

Publishing experts around the world credit erotic fiction as one of the past decade’s biggest literary booms in terms of popularity and sales. While nobody can deny erotica’s gravity among audiences, many are still becoming tired of the ‘same old’ recycled narratives that see women submitting to the demands and wishes of their unrealistic male partners. Thankfully, author Allison Angel has stormed the scene to change this stereotype for good.

She may only be in college, but Angel’s debut release titled ‘The Kittens’ is picking up momentum for its about-turn on the conventions and norms of most erotic fiction to date. In short, Angel puts women where they deserve and want to be – in charge, in control and living out their fantasies with gusto.

Synopsis:
Bree is her high school’s head cheerleader and model student. And she’s a virgin.

On her way to lose her virginity to her long-term loving boyfriend, her life takes a turn she couldn’t have anticipated when her car breaks down and she falls into the hands of an ill-intentioned older man.

But this kitten has claws.

“This is ultimately a story of one girl’s coming-of-age, with a bold focus on her sexual development and the encounters she has along the way,” says Angel, who claims that her work also has a semi-autobiographical element. “The big twist is that Bree isn’t the submissive type that’s usually associated with erotic fiction. She’s in control, knows what she wants and has no trouble living out her fantasies in a way that will keep readers needing only the edge of their seats.”

Continuing, “But the story doesn’t just take place under the sheets. Readers get to see Bree’s tenacity and strength develop in the wider world, as she discovers herself and navigates the overwhelming choices that are part and parcel of growing up. This book will strike a chord with readers of all adult ages, but particularly new adults who struggle with the same decisions Bree has to make.”

Off to a promising start, critics await further works from Angel, who has been described by many as a ‘powerhouse’ author.

Until then, ‘The Kittens’ is available now.

About the author, in her own words:
“Allison Angel is my nom de plume. I’m hiding my true identity because I’m studying in a prominent college English department and my peers and professors look down on “chick lit” and erotic fiction. Even worse, my dad is a public figure and it would be scandalous if the media found out The Kittens was written by his daughter.

Some of the book is semi-autobiographical, but because I was a high school cheerleader, etc., the media would leap to the conclusion that all of it is true. It isn’t! It’s a work of fiction based on my life experiences.

Honestly, truly, I never did sodomize a poor boy with a cucumber. Or pimp out my fellow cheerleaders.”

Breaking Free, by Robyn Lindsey

Synopsis
Samantha Green’s father died when she was very young. Her mother was bedridden before she was in middle school and passed away while she was in her teens. Sam learned from an early age that life was easier if she didn’t let anyone in. She built up walls and closed herself off to protect herself from the possibility of being hurt. That is… until she started to struggle with her own mortality. Sam struggles with a question that eats away at her soul: did her life ever mean anything if there is no one left to mourn her after she is gone? This is a book about finding your own soul, about accepting life’s losses and allowing them to color your world. It’s about sharing your light with not only yourself, but also allowing others in to bask in it.

About the Author
I have wanted to be a published author for as long as I could remember. I began by writing poetry as a pre-teen and have written more short stories than I could possibly remember.

My healer's spirit surfaced as an adult and the fiction writing was pushed aside. I have been a certified life coach, specializing in grief. Hence the birth of my first book: Journal Through Your Grief.

In 2012 I also published Journal Toward Your Joy, a guided journal to help you to be more joyful, and Flow, a book of inspirational quotes and my photography of local waterfalls, lakes, and streams.

2013 brought a compilation of my poetry, and the book I'm honestly the most proud of to date.

2014 will bring the birth of my first fiction novel, as well as me starting the next one and possibly another collection of poetry.

When I'm not writing or coaching, I spend a lot of time journaling, blogging, planning and enjoying the Pacific Northwest with my love.
