Big Phil's Kid, by M.M. Parker

A touching, hilarious rebuttal of the theory that all novels of adolescents are basically the same. Nothing is the same when the scene just sophisticated New York and Palm Beach and the young hero suddenly realizes that the chauffeur is really a bodyguard and that his big businessman father's big money come from big rackets. Lovable gangsters, an Italian mother who spends hours cooking inedible dinners, and a girl next-door who makes the first move are not stereotypes. Indeed, nothing about this novel is predictable, except that it will make anyone who was ever young laugh, and perhaps cry.

16-year-old Larry Carrett is actually no different from any other average American boy, except that he lives in a townhouse in New York, has a mansion in Palm Beach, and drives to college in a bulletproof Cadillac. And, until the day when his uncle Angelo is gunned down in a barbershop, Larry is unaware that his family is “not quite respectable."

When the newspapers reveal the unsavory details, Larry has a hard time defending his new identity to his friends, his girl, and especially to himself. Big Phil's Kid is the hilarious, bittersweet story of how he copes with this unusual situation.

"You'll probably get an immense kick out of Big Phil's Kid...finding one of Holden's (Caulfield of Catcher in the Rye) more articulate and amusing successors is a treat." -Publisher's Weekly

"Mr. Parker is very funny...Altogether, an unexpected delight." -The New York Times

"Read this book - even if you don't have the time." -Best Sellers

"Laugh/cry out loud immediacy, honesty and raunch which will appeal" -VOYA

"Fast-paced, well-written...funny!" -The Denver Post

"Hard to put down, difficult to forget." -Pensacola News Journal

Yohannes Ishi, by Nabse Bamato

Yohannes Ishi, by Nabse Bamato
***Kindle Countdown  Starts May 19, 2014***

Born in Ethiopia, but adopted by a British couple, Yohannes grows up far from his cultural roots. Following the painful decline and eventual demise of his adoptive mother, he is persuaded to return to the beautiful yet seemingly impossible nation where he was born, to take on a teaching job.

With no memories of the land of his birth and no knowledge of the language or culture, Yohannes finds himself a virtual stranger. A chance meeting with the mysterious and alluring Abeba, which can only be described as destiny, results in a personal transformation for Yohannes.

This story paints vivid pictures of contemporary Ethiopia and promotes the exploration of issues of identity and belonging. It also creates a realistic and moving atmosphere that is of interest to anyone with an open mind to look beyond stereotypes and delve into history, humanity or, simply, the profound courage of ordinary people in the face of adversity.

Author Interview with Garrison Davis: 87 and 8

A Conversation with Garrison Davis,
Author of "87 and 8"

Featured Author, Garrison Davis
"87 and 8"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
For me, it’s almost like I don’t have a choice. The characters and the story and situations stay in my head until I get them out on the paper. For this story, I wanted to tell a superhero story that was not a superhero story. It has characters with abilities, but none of them are “heroes”. They are eight guys, who besides being born in the same year, and having nightmares about roughly the same thing, are all complete opposite. This is not a run to save the day kind of story. It is really like Seven Samurai, plus one, and in modern day Las Vegas.. And that’s something I had never really seen or read before…at least not in a setting like this.

Where do you get your ideas?
Music seems to be the biggest influence to me. The right lyric, rhythm or beat stirs my imagination. That with photographs, a line from a newspaper, or something from the headlines, and the story starts to come.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
The worst form of writers block I have is that I cannot move to the next story I have thought of because I have to finish the one I am currently on. Staying with one idea all the way to the end is a little harder than it would seem. At least to me.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
This is a wonderful time. Those ideas of yours can be literally shared with the world. First, you just have to write it. Nobody will read your story unless you write it. Write. Write. Write.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
This is my first self published story, so its all experimental. My degree is in film, so the next step is to make a book trailer or short of it.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
This story was originally a screenplay, and really reads like a script in some ways, so I’d be lying if I hadn’t thought about some people to play in this. All the characters are around 25-26. Adam Levine of Maroon 5, now being an actor, could really do the main character justice. Armie Hammer, Steven R. McQueen, Ryan Reynolds (though he is older). Donald Glover or Bow Wow. Rapper Wiz Khalifia could definitely do something with it as well.

Author Interview With Emily Kinney: The Island of Lote

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
At the time, I was young (14) and determined to write a full novel. Not necessarily because I was compelled by a certain story, but out of pure principle. I had spent my youth racking up a stack of attempted and failed books and the time had come for me to conquer that quest, by gum. Which story it was didn’t really matter to me, although I did want to do a from-scratch, write-as-I-went sort of thing. Which, by the way, I don’t recommend. It’s fun and all, but unhelpful in the long run. Develop, outline, write. Trust me.

Where do you get your ideas?
Oh, man. Everywhere. And I know that’s such a cliché statement, but for me it’s really true. I’ve been working my imagination muscle ever since birth and I can literally form a story out of anything. But the most inspirational stuff for me is out-of-the-ordinary things. Some might say weird or strange or odd. I like things I can relate to.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I have, yes, unfortunately. It’s terrible. You will never understand the dreaded, despised, mired catastrophe writer’s block is until you experience it for yourself. How you deal with it depends upon its degree. Some days my brain simply isn’t working; I walk away and distract myself with something else. Don’t force yourself. It’s never worth it. Other times it’s like I’ve lost my ability to be a writer, and it lasts for a few weeks. It’s torture. That’s when you have to fight back. Empty your mind, and then fill it with things that typically stimulate your imagination. Go for walks. Get rest. Rejuvenate yourself. Claw through the material you already have and then manually make the gears in your mind grind together. Such a process, but you can’t just give up.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Oy. Stock up on aspirin. Also make sure you have something of an income, or at least a healthy stash saved up. I know that sounds boring and off topic, but believe me it helps. You will most likely be encountering things that are out of your control, and you want to spare yourself a lot of worry. Other than that, be intrepid. The most talented writers in the world might not ever be known because of fear. Let your passion fuel you. Understand your own abilities so that you don’t just ‘think’ you’re good. Quality is quality, period. No one can knock quality. It’s our one solid thing to cling to.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
Currently, I am doing everything I can afford. Mainly online endeavors. Social networking is great. Interacting with bloggers and being featured on blogs is excellent stuff. The avenues are pretty endless when it comes to the internet. I can’t give a whole rundown because I do basically everything offered, and the description would go on forever. I do maintain a blog of short stories. That way, people can get a broader understanding of my talents.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Ohhh, that’s a fun question. Mmmm, hard to answer, though. I think I’d want some unknowns, just to give it a super fresh feel. I would love to have Robin Williams play the voice of Bob the Conscience, though. And Dr. Dre to play the part of Dr. Dri, since that’s how I modeled the character.

About the Author
Emily Kinney is a young author from Maine, who has finally had her book published after many years of struggling. She is a great lover of books and storytelling in any form. Her ultimate dream is to become a master storyteller, and is very aware that means proving to the world she is worthy. This first novel is the start of that attempt. Her many interests include hip-hop, video games, art, cooking, acting, and of course writing. She believes that authors have to represent for their craft, as other artists do. Literature, in her opinion, is just as entertaining, and truthfully better for you, than any other form out there, and it deserves to be properly respected and loved. ‘The era might be changing, but good literature is always valuable and always will be,’ Emily claims. ‘It's time that this fact is recognized by the newer generation, and the generation that I come from. I'm an Author With Attitude, and I'm Fueled By Whimsy.’ She calls herself an oddity turned commodity, and would love to meet you someday.

Synopsis
Milo Hestler is a lonely, unusual, fourteen-year-old girl. She is constantly moving from home to home with her oblivious parents. The only friend she has is her conscience, whom she has named Bob. Her only comforts are cooking and listening to hip-hop.

When her family moves yet again, Milo is bullied mercilessly by her classmates. Such treatment prompts her to travel to Australia for summer camp. During the plane ride, Milo awakens to find the plane deserted and about to crash.

After parachuting into the ocean, she discovers she is near an island. Milo passes out, and upon waking, learns she was rescued by a boy named Simon, who is cute, but can't speak English. Not able to understand him, she accidentally says yes when he asks her to marry him.

He leads her to a small town on the island, where they locate someone who can translate for them. Milo is outraged to hear that she is engaged to Simon and wants to call it off, but learns that this island has rules that cannot be broken. She must go through with the marriage against her will.

After learning about the trick he played on her, Milo hates Simon, though it is obvious that sixteen-year-old Simon really likes her. What will happen next on The Island of Lote? From her earliest memories, Emily Kinney has wanted to be a writer. She lives in Maine. "This book is just the first of many to come, rest assured." Publisher's website: sbpra.com/EmilyKinney.

This read makes for a great novel for young adults that enjoy adventure, romance, and drama. The book follows a young lady who lands in an unfamiliar place due to a plane crash. She meets and absolutely adores the first boy she meets on the island she's temporarily trapped on, only to find out he's tricked her (well, kind of...you'll have to read it to see what I mean) and is forced to proceed with things no 14 year old should ever have to encounter so young.

Kindle Spotlight: Just Another Sunday, by Elizabeth Good

Just Another Sunday
by Elizabeth Good

"Just Another Sunday" Is Anything but Ordinary

FIVE STARS: "Lia Benedict is a great main character as she makes her way in life through death and romances that never worked out as they should. Secondary characters such as Jesse, Darla, Lia's brothers and sisters and her parents are well-created and believable with their imperfections and shortcomings. Author Elizabeth Good has a story to tell of how coming of age is rarely easy and she writes that story very well. "Just Another Sunday" is for readers everywhere." - Alice DiNizo for READERS' FAVORITE

Set against the backdrop of the turbulent late 1960s and early 1970s, Just Another Sunday is inspired by actual events and follows Lia Benedict, a teenager growing up in the suburbs of New Jersey.

In the spring of 1968, Lia is 15 years old when her Italian-American family decides to leave Brooklyn for their dream home in the suburbs. But Lia is reluctant to pull up roots and go anywhere, especially to some godforsaken Jersey town. "I would rather thrive in the grime of New York than be plucked from my roots and transplanted in Nowheresland, just to wither away and die. I swear this is the kiss of death."

Her father, Frank Benedict, has worked hard to afford his own home for his wife, Marie, and five children after years of renting in Brooklyn. With the recent marriage of their eldest daughter, and visions of grandchildren in their future, new life in suburbia couldn't be more promising. But their dream home quickly becomes a living nightmare, and the family's move will prove to be the last they will ever make as an intact family of seven.

Just Another Sunday is a compelling five-year snapshot of one woman's life, taking us through teenage angst and rites of passage, new love and broken hearts, friendships and betrayal, triumph and tragedy, and one family's struggle to cope with the inconceivable.

You will search your soul and ponder Life's most provocative questions as you experience the unforgettable conclusion to Just Another Sunday.

Author Interview with Nancy Klann-Moren: The Clock of Life

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
The idea of human inequality and how it comes to be has always baffled me, so the foundation for "The Clock Of Life" was more emotional than cerebral. This narrative began as a short story, and one morning while at a writer’s conference, I read an excerpt. When I finished, the instructor asked what I was doing for the next couple years, because, “What you wrote isn’t a short story, it’s a novel.” Realizing that the subject matter was so important, I took up the challenge.

Where do you get your ideas?
I like to write about working class, blue collar relationships, and quirky characters. In the short story genre, my initial intensions are to explore a characters struggle with something, and then I insert a friendship, real or imagined, and the characters guide me to the end. My novel, The Clock Of Life, started as a short story, and so did the manuscript I’m working on now.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
More than writers block I sometimes suffer with the idea that the writing has little creativity and is boring. It’s like the “muse” has gone down for a nap. When that happens I let it sleep for a few days, then I return to the work refreshed and creative again.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Getting advice on how I should write never worked very well for me because my process is more organic than structured or disciplined. The two things I can say for sure are, don’t give up, and don’t let others make you doubt yourself (or if they do, shake it off fast and get back to your project.) Keep going no matter how long it takes, because it’s the only way it will happen.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
This question makes me laugh because someone once told me that the act of naming which actors should be in the movie version of your novel, before you have a contract, is called Casterbation. So, I’ve stayed clear of that, and instead think about who I would want to produce it. George? Yes. Ben? Duh. Will and Jada? Of course. Opie? It’s an endearment, Mr. Howard. Wahlberg? Which one?

********************

Book Blurb:
In the small town of Hadlee, Mississippi, during the 1980's, Jason Lee Rainey struggles to find his way amongst the old, steadfast Southern attitudes about race, while his friendship with a black boy, Samson Johnson, deepens.

By way of stories from others, Jason Lee learns about his larger-than-life father, who was killed in Vietnam. He longs to become that sort of man, but doesn't believe he has it in him.

In The Clock Of Life he learns lessons from the past, and the realities of inequality. He flourishes with the bond of friendship; endures the pain of senseless death; finds the courage to stand up for what he believes is right; and comes to realize he is his father's son.

This story explores how two unsettling chapters in American history, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, affect the fate of a family, a town, and two boyhood friends.

********************

About the Author:
Nancy Klann began writing short fiction, which led to attending writing classes, conferences and local workshops. The goal―to create unique stories told in a distinctive voice. Short stories were her primary genre until she took up the challenge of turning one into a novel titled The Clock Of Life. Her collection of short stories is titled "Like The Flies On The Patio."

She is now working on a new novel loosely based on the time she and a friend found an old diary in an antique shop. They took a road trip to find the lady who wrote in the book. The novel will take the girls cross country and into all sorts of trouble.
