Yohannes Ishi, by Nabse Bamato

Yohannes Ishi, by Nabse Bamato
***Kindle Countdown  Starts May 19, 2014***

Born in Ethiopia, but adopted by a British couple, Yohannes grows up far from his cultural roots. Following the painful decline and eventual demise of his adoptive mother, he is persuaded to return to the beautiful yet seemingly impossible nation where he was born, to take on a teaching job.

With no memories of the land of his birth and no knowledge of the language or culture, Yohannes finds himself a virtual stranger. A chance meeting with the mysterious and alluring Abeba, which can only be described as destiny, results in a personal transformation for Yohannes.

This story paints vivid pictures of contemporary Ethiopia and promotes the exploration of issues of identity and belonging. It also creates a realistic and moving atmosphere that is of interest to anyone with an open mind to look beyond stereotypes and delve into history, humanity or, simply, the profound courage of ordinary people in the face of adversity.

About the Author
Nabse Bamato grew up in the heart of his much loved Addis, smelling the freshly roasted coffee and listening to the Sunday morning programmes on the radio. He now lives in the grim North West with his young family and a four-legged friend. He is a lifelong supporter of Liverpool Football Club and a voracious reader of newspapers and books of all descriptions.

"Yohannes Ishi" is his first novel.

Young Voices of the Nile, by Jacinthe McCurdy

A Collection of Stories by Children of Uganda

Synopsis
These are stories from the heart and for the heart. Written by Ugandan children, they are stories for children anywhere in the world. There are traditional stories, stories providing a glimpse into a 'day in the life of' these children as well as many stories beaming with deserved pride about the natural wonder and beauty of Uganda. Depending on the order in which you read the stories, the book may act as an unofficial, mini Uganda travel guide, written from the perspective of some of it's youngest citizens.

The book is a collection of writings and short stories by the sons and daughters of the 'mamas' who work at a small orphanage in Jinja, Uganda. The 'mamas' are the Ugandan staff of this orphanage and this affectionate title reflects their dual roles as mothers to their own children and as the primary caregivers to the orphans. The orphanage (Amani Baby Cottage) cares for newborns, babies and toddlers whose parents have either died, abandoned them or are unable to care for them at this time in their lives. As a volunteer working alongside the 'mamas', Jacinthe McCurdy came to notice the importance they put on a proper education for their children. They see education as a key to a better life and hopefully a life removed from poverty. The 'mamas' tireless hard work, love and devotion mean that they sometimes go without even the basis necessities so that their children may receive a good education. Jacinthe McCurdy wanted the children to have an opportunity to write about their country and themselves and to find within themselves the love of writing and reading, fundamental to educational success. This book is theirs...filled with their stories, their drawings and most importantly, their voices.

Note: All profits from the sale of 'Young Voices of the Nile' goes to Amani Baby Cottage.

Journal of an Immigrant, by Jerry G. Shor, Jr.

Synopsis
This novel-essay has not been written with the intention of undermining American culture, or extolling the patriotism of some, but just to give an idea of how this country is seen through the eyes of a newcomer.

In these pages you will find the good, the bad and the ugly of both perspectives: the migrant and the receiver. It also shows the point of view of an immigrant under certain circumstances definitely tied to his past.

Every wandering person who in search of his destiny crosses foreign borders brings with him different experiences that in turn influence the way other immigrants perform in the future. There are thousands of “journals of immigrants” and they all are helpful. This is my version. My intention is to show the reader a broader view, accepting the other, and learning from each of them. Because the more we learn from others, the better we will be as people.
