Author Interview with Carol Margaret Tetlow: "Out of Practice"

A Conversation with Carol Margaret Tetlow
Author of "Out of Practice"

Carol Margaret Tetlow
Featured Author
Carol Margaret Tetlow

When did you first start writing, and when did you finish your first book?
I wrote my very first novel when I was fourteen- a story about children and their ponies. When I went to medical school and first started out as a doctor, it was virtually impossible to find enough time to write, so it was not until 2007 when I started to write seriously and this novel, Out of Practice, took me about a year to complete.

From where do you get your ideas?
From work, largely. I love people. Being a family doctor gives me a unique insight into many different aspects of human nature. Every day I meet a wide range of individuals, families and personalities and other people’s lives never cease to amaze and intrigue me.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
When I started to write Out of Practice, I was quite sure that I had the plot mapped out to the end. Around about a third of the way through, the characters had developed in a way I had not expected and it became clear that what I had planned for them was not what should happen. Thus my favourite chapters would be in the middle third, where my characters took over and wrote the book themselves.

What project are you working on now?
Out of Practice is the first in a series of four novels, all based in the same family practice. The protagonist in each is a different doctor. While I have since written two stand alone novels, I’m now re-visiting the original series and planning the fifth novel.

What is the message behind your stories?
I want to write a good story, full of unexpected twists and characters who evoke a multitude of emotions. Stories that readers can become immersed in.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?
Yes, of course. Sometimes it can be overcome by a long walk with the dogs, other times I find it’s best to leave writing completely for a few days and then come back, full of fresh ideas.

Do you see writing as a career?
When I started out I didn’t. Now that I’m spending less time working as a doctor, I would love to embark on a new career of writing. I’m a very focussed individual who relishes a challenge. Who said that dreams can’t come true?

How did you find your current publisher, and what experience do you get from that?
For the cynics who do not believe in miracles, think again. I put my series of four novels on a webiste called PublishersDesk.com, a platform for showing your work to many publishers and literary agents, world wide. I cannot express my gratitude to Guy Boulianne and Editions Dedicaces for finding me and giving me this opportunity.

What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I was always encouraged to read. With a demanding job, I like to be able to escape from work pressures so I love books that transport me somewhere different. My favourite authors are EF Benson (particularly the Mapp and Lucia series), Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Jane Green to name but a few.

What advice would you give to aspiring writer?
This is easy and I make no apologies for repeating what many will have said before. Firstly, write about something you know. Secondly, never, ever give up. Believe in yourself and your book and keep trying.

Summer fun is coming! And other than turning thirteen, twins, Meghan and Colin Jacoby, are looking forward to a typical summer... well, typical for them. Which means their uncle (and guardian) will pull into the Cobbscott Campground and park his travel trailer for three full months.

Normally, they'd never spend more than a couple weeks in any one place, their uncle preferring to move around. But only until summer when they'd be Cobbscott bound.

Why did he do this every summer? Why did he prefer to move around? The twins have never thought to ask.

Their only concern being that their friend Sebastien would be in Cobbscott as well... the one person who also happens to know their secret- that they can read each other's minds.

Arrival at the campground goes as expected and within hours, Meghan and Colin are already making plans to meet up with Sebastien. But before they do, the campground gets some unexpected visitors.

Visitors with reserved campsites. Sites that have been reserved, but unused, for years.

The twins always wondered who reserved and never used these campsites and now that they have seen the owners, the twins can't help but get an ominous feeling.

These visitors dress strange and act strange, taking hikes into the woods wearing winged tipped shoes and overcoats, disappearing into things clearly too small to fit so many people, and they never stop peering into the sky as if expecting to see something terrible.

And when unexplainable and frightening events follow their arrival, the twins realize that this summer, will be their least typical of all...

The Monsterjunkies An American Family Odyssey, by Erik Daniel Shein and Theresa A. Gates

Being a Normal Family is a State of Mind

2013 Benjamin Franklin Awards™ - 12 - Teen: Fiction (13-18)

Pretty "current" feel for cover design - Twilight readers would pick this book up and read the summary. Relatable to this age group. easy to read Great presentation!

5 Stars - "This is unique enough to be attractive to the intended age group. Dysfunctional families are everywhere. It's a good novel on peer pressure, adolescent decision-making, and working through tough times. It's a well-written story of pain, joy and growth - well done!"

Dysfunctional families are part of our modern reality just as much as global warming and pollution. Sadly, bullying, peer pressure, and feelings of angst and confusion are also part of how we experience life on a day-to-day basis. Erik Daniel Shein and Theresa A. Gates took all these things and combined them with fantasy-related elements, myths, and legends, thus creating a touching and inspiring story of pain, change, and joy.

“The Monsterjunkies: An American Family Odyssey (“Being a Normal Family is a State of Mind”)” is the first book in this series. This novel tells the story of a family and its daily struggles as its members fight against serious issues like bullying, abuse, and unjust labeling, as well as against everyday difficult problems and events (stress, a parent’s absence, parents/children conflicts, etc).

Kickstarter: Michael Hawk Adventures - 1,000,000 READERS or BUST!

Robert Clark Selby, Author
Michael Hawk Adventures: Curse of the Last Moondragon

Wanna do something extraordinary? Help me set the record for self-publishing a book through Kickstarter.

THE PROJECT - 1,000,000 READERS or BUST

"Michael Hawk Adventures: Curse of the Last Moondragon" is a YA fantasy adventure. It’s the first novel in a planned seven-part series. But to get it and its sequels published, I need your help. I need your help to do something extraordinary. Something unprecedented.

I need your help to set the record for self-publishing a book through Kickstarter.

KIRKUS REVIEW
https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/robert-clark-selby/michael-hawk-adventures/

In Selby’s debut young-adult adventure novel, a boy hits the road during the Depression and finds friends, foes and a fire-breathing dragon.

Twelve-year-old Christopher and his father have traveled from town to town for most of the boy’s life, but Christopher doesn’t know why. The mystery deepens when Christopher’s father is “bloodied and scarred beyond recognition” after a car chase with thugs. “It’s you they want, Christopher. It’s you.…Run,” his father says. After riding the rails with some less-than-delightful hoboes, Christopher assumes the fake name Michael Hawk and winds up in an orphanage run by the sadistic Mr. and Mrs. Drudge. There, he also meets fellow orphan Emily, “the loveliest person he’d ever seen.” He’s ordered to search for a treasure map hidden in the orphanage’s attic; if he doesn’t deliver, he’s told, the Drudges will throw him into “the pit.” However, he encounters a ghost that makes his chore more difficult, and his adventures become more fantastic as the story progresses: He joins an aerial circus run by the flamboyant Lotus Moondragon, journeys to the Island of Whispering Mist and learns that he may be a person known as “The One,” foretold by a mysterious prophecy. Author Selby’s delirious mixture of story ingredients will keep young bookworms reading as they await the next plot twist. Although the book has obvious debts to Louis Sachar’s Holes and the Harry Potter series, it’s anchored by colorful characters, athletic prose and an intriguing mystery that readers will want to see resolved in future volumes. That said, parents should be aware that the book doesn’t shy away from dealing with some darker material (including carnivorous spiders and murder)—a quality shared by some of the most beloved works of YA literature.

A fast-paced adventure story that will engage young readers.

Welcome to Stauros Island, where the heroes and heroines of lost myths and legends come to life.

Once home to the illustrious Order of the Crane -- guardians of the world's myths and legends -- Stauros Island, now in the hands of the Order of the Shrike, is an elite university whose students are guaranteed positions of power upon graduating.

However, a dark curse hangs over the island: students are disappearing. The school officials declare it the work of a demon, and blame Hugh Fogg -- a young monk of the Order of the Crane who died 400 years earlier.

Could the spirit of a young man who died in 1615 come back to haunt an island and terrorize its students? If so, for what purpose? A Myth to the Night is Hugh's story and his struggle to see his mission complete.

Josh doesn't breathe or have a heart that beats, but he does think, and brains are not his food of choice. He walks the streets, killing zombies with his trusty sword called Rockstar. Josh's concern that he might be the only one of his kind is dispelled when he sees Tasha, who's obviously confused and talking to herself.
