The Monsterjunkies An American Family Odyssey, by Erik Daniel Shein and Theresa A. Gates

Being a Normal Family is a State of Mind

2013 Benjamin Franklin Awards™ - 12 - Teen: Fiction (13-18)

Pretty "current" feel for cover design - Twilight readers would pick this book up and read the summary. Relatable to this age group. easy to read Great presentation!

5 Stars - "This is unique enough to be attractive to the intended age group. Dysfunctional families are everywhere. It's a good novel on peer pressure, adolescent decision-making, and working through tough times. It's a well-written story of pain, joy and growth - well done!"

Dysfunctional families are part of our modern reality just as much as global warming and pollution. Sadly, bullying, peer pressure, and feelings of angst and confusion are also part of how we experience life on a day-to-day basis. Erik Daniel Shein and Theresa A. Gates took all these things and combined them with fantasy-related elements, myths, and legends, thus creating a touching and inspiring story of pain, change, and joy.

“The Monsterjunkies: An American Family Odyssey (“Being a Normal Family is a State of Mind”)” is the first book in this series. This novel tells the story of a family and its daily struggles as its members fight against serious issues like bullying, abuse, and unjust labeling, as well as against everyday difficult problems and events (stress, a parent’s absence, parents/children conflicts, etc).

Kindle Spotlight: "World of Jinn: Awakenings"

"World of Jinn: Awakenings"
By: E. Kerrigan

A war was fought in the Jinn world between the Shaitans and the Amin. The Shaitans won, leaving the evil King Iblis as primary ruler over the five Jinn kingdoms. Years later, five humans are taken to the Jinn world after almost being killed by a group of ghouls. In a hidden mountain city the humans are told by Queen Daaina that they are in fact Jinn, and that they must shed their human bodies and become Jinn again. After this they can lead the Amin to victory, and destroy Iblis and his army of ghouls once and for all. To become Jinn again, they must retrieve Ambrosia plants hidden throughout the world, and battle more ghouls along the way. Inevitably, it will not be their external enemies that are their greatest danger, but instead a traitor from within.

The World of Jinn trilogy will explore the best and worst of humankind. This first book introduces us to the main characters and recounts the past Jinn lives of three of the five main characters. The trilogy was inspired by various tales of the ‘Jinn’ in the Qur’an and Arabian folklore. Although centered on creatures mentioned in Islam, this book examines many paths of faith and argues that regardless of where our beliefs originate, it is our actions that define us.

Author Interview with Ennovy Yentrok: Tales from Trattaharia, Emerging Trattah: Chronicle One

A Conversation with Ennovy Yentrok,
Author of "Tales from Trattaharia, Emerging Trattah: Chronicle One"

Why did you feel you had to write Tales from Trattaharia, Emerging Trattah: Chronicle One?
This story, like any other that I write, is more of a calling for me, a divine commission if you will.

Where do you get your ideas?
As this story is divinely inspired, the best answer would be from Spirit.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I only experience writer's block when I try to insert my own ideas instead of letting God flow through to write what it is that He wants me to write. I've learned very quickly that if I am to be successful then I must be willing to surrender my own thoughts and ideas. I joke with people all of the time saying that God is the writer while I am just the scribe.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
There is so much that I have learned that I have actually been asked to write a book on it. But you can't say everything in a Q & A. Therefore, my best advice would be this:

1. Make sure that whatever story you write is one that your heart knows you are meant to share.
2. Settle in and buckle up: the writing process and publishing process can be heart wrenching at times.
3. Writing and getting people to read your writing is a passion that can be dangerously all-consuming. Remember to stay in balance for your own well being as well as keeping your business sense clear because as writers we tend to be emotional about our work. Do what you can do, but know your limits and let others help you when they can.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
Your website is your real estate; location, location, location--make it count. Along those same lines, everything that you do should be so different from everyone else that people remember you/your book. In a way, it should be iconographic. I have had people to stop readers of mine on the street, in the subway, etc., because they have recognized my cover art, business cards, bookmarks. Lastly, network, network, network.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
I honestly don't know. But, if after you read my book and you have some ideas, feel free to let me know.

Author Interview with Edward Dean West: Of Hearts & Stars

A Conversation with Edward Dean West,
Author of "Of Hearts & Stars"

Featured Author Edward Dean West
"Of Hearts & Stars"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
Telling it is just too fun, and the characters are absolutely wonderful.

Where do you get your ideas?
A lot of my ideas come from when I daydream while listening to music. I prefer anything from classical through jrock, and up to gangster rap. Next would be my extensive gaming habit, followed by my crippling reading addiction with the movies and tv shows I’ve watched tagging behind.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I’ve always wanted to simply finish a story. Since I was fifteen even, but I haven’t honestly tackled it this hard previously. Before I waited until I could find time to write, and I let myself get distracted a lot. What about now? I make the time to write. I sneak into the cookie jar and steal time from myself to write, while not letting a day go by without at least thinking about my plot.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Get psyched about your writing. Don’t just put it out because you’re sure it will turn a dollar. Imbue your scenes with every bit of emotion, leaving none bare, and don’t stop until you can see what you read with your mind’s eye. Then have someone edit it.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
I don’t really like to talk about my marketing strategies, but you’ll want exposure. Start reaching out to blog owners to ask if they’ll feature you. Sign up with goodreads so that your book can be listed on listopia. Amazon’s very own listmania is also a good resource. Those last two help readers discover your work while they’re out browsing. There’s more that’s worth a look, but for now I’m still watching my results closely.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Oh no, I don’t know! Johnny Depp! I want to see lots of Johnny Depp and some Robert Downey Jr. Not entirely sure what parts they’d play, but… okay seriously? I’m not too familiar with teen actors these days, the age range that makes up a large portion of my cast, but I think Mischa Collins could do a killer Mr. Method.

Synopsis:
Hello hello! Ed West here, and I'm happy to see you checking out my novel. It's my first, but definitely not my last. Writing Of Hearts And Stars was a fun experience and started out as way for me to release stress and tension whenever I could get the chance. This often resulted in having a spiral notebook next to me at work, and if there was a two minute lull in traffic I would quickly write up a bit of the manuscript. When I got home I would type up what was written and make an attempt to pre-edit it. Eventually I finished writing and typing the manuscript, and it came time for me to think about where to go next, so I reached out to my friends and we pulled off what you see here today. Either way check out the preview, and just know the book rocks harder and harder as you turn the pages. The only thing you have to do is enjoy it!

Edward Dean West keeps it real. As in really awesome. He bikes to work so that he can stay green and eats all of the veggies while drinking all of the juice. I think Ed West is a pretty cool author. Eh tells stories and doesn’t afraid of anything.

Author Interview With Adam Graham: Fly Another Day

Featured Author: Adam Graham
Fly Another Day

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
After my first novel, Tales of the Dim Knight was released, I realized two things.

First, there really was more we could do with the character. Based on listener feedback, I felt like we could do a more focused story, so Fly Another Day is the beginning of a brand new series for my superhero Powerhouse. It’s the first of what will be a five book series, with one key central plot working through each episode. The second book, Powerhouse Hard Pressed will be out this week, and the third one, Ultimate Midlife Crisis is available in June.

Second, when I started with Tales of the Dim Knight, I set out to poke fun and play with every superhero trope and conventions. As I began to research the possibility of a second book (research=reading comic books and watching superhero programs), I realized I had quite a bit of comedic material to work through. And I would never leave that much material on the table.

Where do you get your ideas?
Most of the parody ideas come from the source material will come from superhero stories themselves. One of my favorite examples is a silver age Daredevil comic book I read in which he faced Electro who bragged about “almost defeating Spider-man.” In this book we introduce the character of the Silver Medal who brags about everyone he almost defeated (but ended up losing to.) Another classic item that invited parody is a 1994 Iron Man cartoon in which our hero announces that he can use sound energy in place of solar energy and escapes from the villains on the strength of a cassette tape of classical music in the Walkman of a teenage girl.

Beyond those sorts of parodies and homages, I really keep my eyes open looking for story ideas and they are everywhere. I received an email from someone who was very passionate about an issue of etiquette and maybe a little overwrought. And it occurred to me that would be fun to have an insane etiquette blogger who is over the top rude in his advocacy of good manners, and then as we wrote the story, he became one of the main villains in Powerhouse Hard Pressed.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I do and usually it’s caused either by lack of rest or more often, taking the story in the wrong direction. If it’s the first, I try to go to bed and realize at some point that I’m not making progress and step back. In the other case, I journey back through the book and I find where my plot took a wrong turn and I take the book in another direction. If I’ve written anything significant, I’ll save it in a file for “cuts.” And then resume my story.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
First, find what writing style works for you. There are some fairly absolute writing rules out there as well as some rules set by your publisher if you opt to publish traditional. Beyond that, there’s a lot of writing advice out there you have to wade through. How do you research? How do you write? What programs do you use? You have to be very careful that you don’t adopt practices that sabotage yourself.

In the 21st Century, I think the most important decision is whether to self-publish or not. The big question you need to answer before you do that is why you want to self-publish. There are many great reasons to self-publish. For me, it’s a matter of writing in a genre without a lot of other publishers. Others just want to write and publish prolifically without the red tape of a publisher. Still others are uber marketers and the only thing traditional publishers could do for them is relieve them of part of the profits.

There are bad reasons to self-publish too. You shouldn’t self-publish to avoid editing, and you shouldn’t self-publish expecting things to be easy. You’ll need a lot of help and it’ll be a lot of work, and the only way it pays off is with a quality product.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
I do plenty of Goodreads Giveaways. (You can follow my goodreads author page for more info. I do blog interviews and I’m willing to try almost anything. I even tried advertising on movie screens back in 2011.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?]
Dave and Naomi Johnson would be played by first time Hollywood actors, not stars to reflect their regular people nature. Robert Downey, Jr would be great as Mitch Farrow, CEO of Dorado Incorporated, a very complex villain. I’d love to see Dana Carvey given a shot at a comeback playing Mr. Manners, the mad etiquette blogger. David Hasselhoff would make a cameo as reformed mob boss Marco Silvano. In Powerhouse Hard Pressed, Marco shows up dressed as a sea captain wearing a beard. I’d love to see Hasselhoff pull that off.

********************

Synopsis
A year ago, Dave Johnson flew high as the super-powered crime fighter Powerhouse, defeating Seattle’s top crime family and becoming a local legend. In the process, his marriage nearly crashed, his eldest son suffered a life-threatening injury, and Dave lost his super powers. Now, Dave is a new Christian, a stay-at-home Dad, and living off memories and comic book royalties.

An interdimensional alien hires the cynical Mitch Farrow as the CEO of Dorado Incorporated. Farrow attacks Powerhouse’s legacy in the media. This only prompts Dave to seek to regain his powers and become Powerhouse again. This time, he’s determined to not only fight crime, but poverty, fatherlessness, and hunger and enlists the help of local churches.

Farrow’ then hires a lawyer who threatens Powerhouse with frivolous lawsuits that could ground him forever. Outraged, the Johnson family’s super-powered alien chef pledges to rid Earth of lawyers and introduces his race’s robotic lawyers. He unwittingly sells the plans to a Dorado subsidiary, who equips the Robolawyers with powerful alien weapons that make them the most dangerous threat Powerhouse has ever faced.

Author Interview with Julian T. Nichols: Joy: A Treasure Protector Story

Why did you feel you had to tell this story.
I have always been intrigued with the concept of parallel worlds and eventually the character came to me inspired by the children in my life. I see a lot of younger children struggling with self esteem issues and I felt that this series address those issues that adolescents struggle with.

Where do you get your ideas?
Where don't I get my ideas is a better question. I have a generally idea of what I want out of a story and then the characters fill out the rest taking bits and pieces from everyday life and sometimes making crazy stuff up.

Do you ever experience writer's block and how do you overcome it?
I definitely have experienced writer's block more often that I would like. There are times when I step away from my main project to either distract myself with music, a movie, a good book or anything to clear my head for a while. Other times I will write gibberish just to keep the writing flow going.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
I would tell aspiring writers to research before anything and be comfortable with the decisions you make. And of course make sure you have a quality product, one you can be proud of.

How do you market your work?
Have you found some avenues to be more successful that others?
I do a lot of social networking. However, I find nothing works better than good old word of mouth, so I focus on book clubs and niche blogs and websites.

Author Interview With Clay Gilbert: Eternity: A Novel

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
All stories come from the same place: the experiences, passions, and interests of the author. I began writing Eternity when I was seventeen and still in high school; I finished the initial draft in longhand as a freshman in college; initially typed it all up when I was in my mid-twenties, and then let it sit for another ten years while I worked on other projects, including other fiction, poetry, and a career in teaching. The story, at it's core, is about identity and ideals, and about the ability of any person to achieve their desires, if they have imagination and will enough to make it happen.

Where do you get your ideas?
Part of that's answered in the previous question. Ideas come from deep parts of the self, even ideas for science-fiction stories like Eternity, or like the novel I have coming out later in the year from PDMI Publishing, called Annah. The form the ideas take come from the nature of the idea—some things are poems, and some things are short stories, and some things are novels. Types of stories? Most of my fiction is science-fiction, fantasy and horror, because those are the lenses I'm most comfortable using to comment on the world. But if stories of any kind aren't rooted in human concerns—even if they're filled with aliens, monsters, or other worlds, then I personally wouldn't bother.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I don't get 'writer's block.' That's a phrase somebody made up to get around the hard work of sitting down and actually writing. Writing is work. Just because it's filled with inspiration and many elements of wonder and magic doesn't mean it isn't. Establish a routine. Always write in the same place; don't let yourself be interrupted if you can help it. Know when you sit down to write that you have the tools you need. If you feel like you're running out of material, take a blank sheet of paper out, think about your characters or the situations in your story and just free-write with no regard to form or context until you feel like you can go on with the main work at hand.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
There are no aspiring writers, unless by that, one means people who don't write. Don't aspire to write—do it. Now, as far as aspiring authors—meaning those who haven't yet been published—get your work in as nearly a finished state as you possibly can. Then get someone else to read it—several someone-elses. Then send out your work; send it to writing contests, editors, agents. It took me decades to get my current publishing contract with PDMI Publishing, who will be publishing my second novel, Annah, later this year. I self-published Eternity with Amazon.com/CreateSpace shortly before getting the deal with PDMI—out of a drive to finally get something of mine out there. Self-publishing can be valuable, but it requires aggressive marketing on the part of the author, a burden that can be relieved when an author has a reliable and supportive publisher at his or her back, as I do now.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
I've made up flyers for the book; I've created webpages at wordpress.com—a fantastic blogging site I'd recommend to any writer—all of these with a link to the amazon.com page, where the book can be ordered. Word of mouth is good, as is contacting local media. Organizing local book events, such as book signings at libraries or bookstores, is also an effective means of promotion. I'm in the process now of setting up a signing at my local Books-a-Million.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Leonardo diCaprio might have been a good fit for my main character, Eternity, if the film had been made back when “Titanic” was made. At this point, I'd have to give that some more thought.

Synopsis
Owen Sage is the emblematic college freshman at Easton Falls University. With all the worries about his first year in college, he was not prepared for what would happen next. His way of life was flipped upside down when he mysteriously crossed into another dimension, into the beautiful land of Everville. His excitement was abruptly halted when he discovered that there was a darkness forged against both the natural world, which he knew well, and the new land which he discovered, Everville. He must devise a plan to save both worlds while joining forces with the race of Fron and The Keepers, whom both harbor hidden secrets he must learn in order to gain power over the evil that dwells in The Other In Between.

With a race against time to save both worlds, his short time at Easton Falls did not quite prepare him for the evil, dark forces he must fight in order to conquer The Other In Between.

5-STAR REVIEW
A Fresh Story: Roy Huff is a new face on the scene. As a storyteller, he is to be admired. Everville is complete fantasy, reminding one occasionally of The Hobbit. It is basically a struggle between good and evil. As such, Huff gives us a world that is neither all one or all the other. And while Mr. Huff may not have the polish of a Tolkien, he is nonetheless a very capable storyteller.

I am not ordinarily a fan of this genre but I must say, in the interest of full disclosure, that Mr. Huff asked me to read and review his novel. But know this: were it complete trash I wouldn't hesitate to say so. I felt it was very good. It certainly deserves to be read by those who love fantasy. Within this context it is readable and enjoyable.

As she realizes her dreams are more than they appear to be, she finds herself questioning who she thought she was. Her search for the truth from thousands of years ago becomes complicated, as it turns many of those around her into enemies. A single choice can affect who we are, and who we become.
What if a single choice affected the fate of billions for good or evil? Who’s to blame when Ariella grasps she’s in the middle of the eternal war waged for the souls of men?
