The Initiate's Crucible, by Brett Baker

(The Freeworlds Chronicles)

Abby Ashford was a student at the Psion Academy, a school dedicated to training the young and talented to become psions - telepathic and telekinetic warriors who dedicate their lives in service to the United Freeworlds. However, Abby proved to be a bit of a handful at the academy, and her life took a dramatic turn when she was shipped out to learn from Master Jax Idor as his apprentice.

But Abby's time in training may prove to be short-lived. There is a crisis brewing on the planet of Mentallos - an influential member of the Freeworlds. Can Master Idor and Abby contain the situation? Or will they find themselves overhwelmed?

Author Interview with Edward Dean West: Of Hearts & Stars

A Conversation with Edward Dean West,
Author of "Of Hearts & Stars"

"Of Hearts & Stars"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
Telling it is just too fun, and the characters are absolutely wonderful.

Where do you get your ideas?
A lot of my ideas come from when I daydream while listening to music. I prefer anything from classical through jrock, and up to gangster rap. Next would be my extensive gaming habit, followed by my crippling reading addiction with the movies and tv shows I’ve watched tagging behind.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I’ve always wanted to simply finish a story. Since I was fifteen even, but I haven’t honestly tackled it this hard previously. Before I waited until I could find time to write, and I let myself get distracted a lot. What about now? I make the time to write. I sneak into the cookie jar and steal time from myself to write, while not letting a day go by without at least thinking about my plot.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Get psyched about your writing. Don’t just put it out because you’re sure it will turn a dollar. Imbue your scenes with every bit of emotion, leaving none bare, and don’t stop until you can see what you read with your mind’s eye. Then have someone edit it.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
I don’t really like to talk about my marketing strategies, but you’ll want exposure. Start reaching out to blog owners to ask if they’ll feature you. Sign up with goodreads so that your book can be listed on listopia. Amazon’s very own listmania is also a good resource. Those last two help readers discover your work while they’re out browsing. There’s more that’s worth a look, but for now I’m still watching my results closely.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Oh no, I don’t know! Johnny Depp! I want to see lots of Johnny Depp and some Robert Downey Jr. Not entirely sure what parts they’d play, but… okay seriously? I’m not too familiar with teen actors these days, the age range that makes up a large portion of my cast, but I think Mischa Collins could do a killer Mr. Method.

Synopsis:
Hello hello! Ed West here, and I'm happy to see you checking out my novel. It's my first, but definitely not my last. Writing Of Hearts And Stars was a fun experience and started out as way for me to release stress and tension whenever I could get the chance. This often resulted in having a spiral notebook next to me at work, and if there was a two minute lull in traffic I would quickly write up a bit of the manuscript. When I got home I would type up what was written and make an attempt to pre-edit it. Eventually I finished writing and typing the manuscript, and it came time for me to think about where to go next, so I reached out to my friends and we pulled off what you see here today. Either way check out the preview, and just know the book rocks harder and harder as you turn the pages. The only thing you have to do is enjoy it!

About the Author:
Edward Dean West keeps it real. As in really awesome. He bikes to work so that he can stay green and eats all of the veggies while drinking all of the juice. I think Ed West is a pretty cool author. Eh tells stories and doesn’t afraid of anything.
