THE PROJECT - 1,000,000 READERS or BUST

"Michael Hawk Adventures: Curse of the Last Moondragon" is a YA fantasy adventure. It’s the first novel in a planned seven-part series. But to get it and its sequels published, I need your help. I need your help to do something extraordinary. Something unprecedented.

I need your help to set the record for self-publishing a book through Kickstarter.

KIRKUS REVIEW

In Selby’s debut young-adult adventure novel, a boy hits the road during the Depression and finds friends, foes and a fire-breathing dragon.

Twelve-year-old Christopher and his father have traveled from town to town for most of the boy’s life, but Christopher doesn’t know why. The mystery deepens when Christopher’s father is “bloodied and scarred beyond recognition” after a car chase with thugs. “It’s you they want, Christopher. It’s you.…Run,” his father says. After riding the rails with some less-than-delightful hoboes, Christopher assumes the fake name Michael Hawk and winds up in an orphanage run by the sadistic Mr. and Mrs. Drudge. There, he also meets fellow orphan Emily, “the loveliest person he’d ever seen.” He’s ordered to search for a treasure map hidden in the orphanage’s attic; if he doesn’t deliver, he’s told, the Drudges will throw him into “the pit.” However, he encounters a ghost that makes his chore more difficult, and his adventures become more fantastic as the story progresses: He joins an aerial circus run by the flamboyant Lotus Moondragon, journeys to the Island of Whispering Mist and learns that he may be a person known as “The One,” foretold by a mysterious prophecy. Author Selby’s delirious mixture of story ingredients will keep young bookworms reading as they await the next plot twist. Although the book has obvious debts to Louis Sachar’s Holes and the Harry Potter series, it’s anchored by colorful characters, athletic prose and an intriguing mystery that readers will want to see resolved in future volumes. That said, parents should be aware that the book doesn’t shy away from dealing with some darker material (including carnivorous spiders and murder)—a quality shared by some of the most beloved works of YA literature.

A fast-paced adventure story that will engage young readers.

Author Interview with Amr Metwally: Shariah Law For America

A Conversation with Amr Metwally,
Author of "Shariah Law For America"

Featured Author Amr Metwally
"Shariah Law For America"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
There is so much misconception about Islam and so much evil going on in the world that I feel I have this duty to write this book.

Where do you get your ideas?
Inspiration came to me from the Quran and Hadith. The Quran is the holy text of Muslims and the Hadith is the teaching and prophecies of the Prophet Mohammad.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I love to write. I believe that this ability is a gift from the Almighty. Initially, I am a writer of film screenplays, and I have been doing that since 2006. I was body building at the time and all these good ideas would come to mind. My trek to the local Starbucks was a 20 minute walk, that’s when my ideas would form into screenplay format. When I got to Starbucks all I did was write what was thought up in mind prior to getting to Starbucks. A lot of writers they sit in front of the computer and force their brain to come up with something. Never do that, nothing good ever comes from forcing your brain to write anything. Your brain must wander. Go to the mall, walk around at night, climb a mountain. Do something with some sort of physical activity, exercise if you can. You may go days without writing a single word. But out of the blue, you will get a plethora of ideas. And that my fellow writers, is gold!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Do this 55% for the people and 45% for yourself. In other words, if you are writing to get rich or famous, don’t even bother writing at all. The momentum won’t carry you past your first obstacle if you are doing this for selfish reasons. If you are writing because you believe your work will benefit your audience, that passion will carry you through just about anything. Don’t worry about the technical parts of the writing and publishing process. You can go to Microsoft’s website and download an industry standard template for a book manuscript. All you have to do is write. Thanks to amazing online technology and companies like Amazon’s Createspace, you can self-publish your book in hardcopy or Kindle format with almost no out-of-pocket expenses.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
This will be first book I ever publish. I have done an initial research for marketing, seems like advertising on Goodreads.com might be of benefit. Of course, if you just want to get yourself and your work out there, it is best to contact blogs for book reviews and see if they can do a review of your book and/or host an author Q&A.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
“Shariah Law for America” being a nonfiction book has no story or central figures to be turned into a movie. However, with the prophecies and verses in it someone can spin it into a really good apocalyptical thriller movie.
