Author Interview with Carol Margaret Tetlow: "Out of Practice"

A Conversation with Carol Margaret Tetlow
Author of "Out of Practice"

Carol Margaret Tetlow
Featured Author
Carol Margaret Tetlow

When did you first start writing, and when did you finish your first book?
I wrote my very first novel when I was fourteen- a story about children and their ponies. When I went to medical school and first started out as a doctor, it was virtually impossible to find enough time to write, so it was not until 2007 when I started to write seriously and this novel, Out of Practice, took me about a year to complete.

From where do you get your ideas?
From work, largely. I love people. Being a family doctor gives me a unique insight into many different aspects of human nature. Every day I meet a wide range of individuals, families and personalities and other people’s lives never cease to amaze and intrigue me.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?
When I started to write Out of Practice, I was quite sure that I had the plot mapped out to the end. Around about a third of the way through, the characters had developed in a way I had not expected and it became clear that what I had planned for them was not what should happen. Thus my favourite chapters would be in the middle third, where my characters took over and wrote the book themselves.

What project are you working on now?
Out of Practice is the first in a series of four novels, all based in the same family practice. The protagonist in each is a different doctor. While I have since written two stand alone novels, I’m now re-visiting the original series and planning the fifth novel.

What is the message behind your stories?
I want to write a good story, full of unexpected twists and characters who evoke a multitude of emotions. Stories that readers can become immersed in.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?
Yes, of course. Sometimes it can be overcome by a long walk with the dogs, other times I find it’s best to leave writing completely for a few days and then come back, full of fresh ideas.

Do you see writing as a career?
When I started out I didn’t. Now that I’m spending less time working as a doctor, I would love to embark on a new career of writing. I’m a very focussed individual who relishes a challenge. Who said that dreams can’t come true?

How did you find your current publisher, and what experience do you get from that?
For the cynics who do not believe in miracles, think again. I put my series of four novels on a webiste called PublishersDesk.com, a platform for showing your work to many publishers and literary agents, world wide. I cannot express my gratitude to Guy Boulianne and Editions Dedicaces for finding me and giving me this opportunity.

What books have most influenced your life?
As a child, I was always encouraged to read. With a demanding job, I like to be able to escape from work pressures so I love books that transport me somewhere different. My favourite authors are EF Benson (particularly the Mapp and Lucia series), Simon Brett, Peter Lovesey, Jane Green to name but a few.

What advice would you give to aspiring writer?
This is easy and I make no apologies for repeating what many will have said before. Firstly, write about something you know. Secondly, never, ever give up. Believe in yourself and your book and keep trying.

Rage,by Lawrence Gold

Rage
When normal people suddenly attack and murder, their defense attorney hires Dr. Michael Rose, a former cop turned forensic psychiatrist and his associate, Karen Scott to represent them in court. The inexplicable events mystify these experienced professionals, and together they seek a rational explanation.

When psychiatric evaluation reveals a pattern among the subjects, Michael suspects that there is more to these incidents than spontaneous psychosis. Using his instincts and skills as a former police detective, Michael and Karen begin their own investigation. What they uncover is chilling.

Who is behind it? Why is it happening, and most importantly can they do something before the killer strikes again? During the dramatic denouement, Michael must wrestle with his conscience and the true meaning of justice.

About the Author
Lawrence Gold
I was born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, moved to Queens, and then, as New Yorkers say, we ascended to the Island. After graduating from Valley Stream Central High School, I went to Adelphi, a college then, a university now, and then to medical school in Chicago. The war in Vietnam interrupted my postgraduate training with a year in Colorado Springs and another as a Battalion Surgeon in Vietnam. I spent seven months in the Central Highlands with the 4th Infantry and five months in an evacuation hospital in Long Binh outside Saigon where I ran the emergency room.

I returned intact in 1968 to complete my training in internal medicine and diseases of the kidney, nephrology. I worked for twenty-three years in Berkeley, California in a hospital-based practice caring for patients with complicated illnesses often in ICU and served as Chief of Medicine.

My wife Dorlis and I retired in October 1995 and sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge for a life at sea in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Four years later, exhausted from repairing everything on board, (often many times) we sold the sailboat and within a year took the lazy man's out; we bought a Nordic Tug, a trawler. We motored around Florida, the Bahamas, the entire East Coast and completed two 'Circle trips' to Canada and back, eight months, the first time, five months, the second.

I wrote professionally as a physician to inform but rarely to entertain, at least not on purpose. First, "Do No Harm" was published in April 2007. "No Cure for Murder" was released in August 2011. "For the Love of God" was published in January 2012 and "The Sixth Sense" in July 2012. In the last two years, I've written three screenplays based on my novels and hope to see one or more produced for the screen. I submitted my screenplay, "Rage" to the 80th Annual Writer's Digest contest and won honorable mention (57 out of 11,000).

We live in beautiful Grass Valley with 13 year old Mike, a terrier mix and Bennie, a 7 year old purebred though enormous Yorkie.

Misdiagnosed: The Adrenal Fatigue Link, by Dr. Steven Zodkoy

Are you tired of not feeling right? Would you like to feel more relaxed, calmer, and happier while living with less pain? Have you had enough of knowing there is something wrong with your body but not getting the answers you need from your physician? Are you starting to realize that something else needs to be done?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are reading the right book!

I wrote this book for you, the reader, and not for your physician. I have taken some minor liberties with the technical wording and purposely kept the medical jargon and clinical research to a minimum. The purposes of this book are to clearly define and explain adrenal fatigue, to provide tools to help you determine if you suffer from adrenal fatigue, and to deliver a concise course of action for you to achieve optimal health. The information presented is vastly superior to what most physicians know or understand. Please share it with those who are open-minded enough to learn.

“As a mother of eight and a U.S. Marine, I have seen much across the physical and emotional spectrum. Of all that I have accomplished, one of the most significant would be to get you to trust what Dr. Zodkoy tells you. This is not a theory. I have experienced and seen the life-changing results time and again. Don't wonder if it works; it does.

It is transformational. Don't wait.” —Brigadier General Marcela Monahan, USMC

“This book is for anyone serious about embracing a natural approach to an improved life—at any age.”  —Janet Bray Attwood, New York Times Bestseller & Co-author of The Passion Test

“Get inspired to make good choices and live more healthfully, vibrantly, and youthfully with the tips and advice that Dr. Steven Zodkoy offers in his new book, Misdiagnosed: The Adrenal Fatigue Link.”  —Sammy Pyon, DC

A must read for anyone:

• looking for the answer to why modern medicine has failed them

• wanting to understand the hidden cause of their health issues

• trying to improve their physical and mental health

• who is ready to start enjoying life again

• interested in feeling younger, happier, and more alive

Author Interview with Jo Ana Starr, PHD: Quantum Self Hypnosis: Awaken the Genius Within

A Conversation with Jo Ana Starr,
Author of "Quantum Self Hypnosis"

Featured Author, Jo Ana Starr
"Quantum Self Hypnosis: Awaken the Genius Within"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
I have worked in the field of Clinical Hypnotherapy for the last 27 years. During that time, I have watched clients accomplish things that many would say are not possible, and yet they happened. Even before that time, I had an innate belief in the limitless power of the human mind and spirit, so watching others achieve their dreams has been a deeply rewarding experience. In addition, I also believe that many, if not most, people are entirely unaware of their own limitlessness and I wanted to share a method, Self Hypnosis, that heightened their ability to make dramatic and permanent personal change.

Where do you get your ideas?
My book is non-fiction, so in Quantum Self Hypnosis I share what I’ve experienced in my own life, my experiences with students of New England Institute of Hypnotherapy, and my own Clinical Hypnotherapy practice, as well as what I believe.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
In my experience when you write about something that you deeply believe in and that you have a lot of information about, the words come out almost more quickly than you can type them. I believe that most books, even fiction, are channeled. I started but did not finish, a fictional work years ago and my characters talked about events, experiences, and skills that I didn’t personally have any knowledge of.

While the book we’re discussing is non-fiction and based on my education, research and experience, I still felt that the words just flowed. It was an awe-inspiring, and yet a challenging experience to be a sort of prisoner at the keyboard as the words just poured out through my fingers onto the computer keyboard. I know this sounds pretty woo-woo, but it’s true.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
All my comments are directed to non-fiction books because that’s my genre.

A. Write the book you want to read, and you will write a good book.

B. Write the table of contents first; make it the TOC you’d love to see in the book on the topic you’re covering, and use it as the primary structure of the book. Then use the TOC as an outline and under each chapter write topic headings that you want to cover in the book. Outline under those headings, keywords that you want to cover. After that, order the topics in the most logical way. This will help to keep your book’s information logically presented and result in organized content.

C. Pick a very specific topic. For example, if you are a huge fan of the First World War and want to write a book about that event, pick a battle, campaign, battalion or some very specific aspect of that war and write about that. New authors decide to write about WW1 and find that the topic of their book gets away from them because it’s too big.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
That’s a good question. I do a little bit of everything: solicit book reviews, FB posts, TW posts, video testimonials, blog posts, a website for each book, and more. I also rely heavily on Amazon’s web presence to drive sales.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
My book is non-fiction, so I think the likelihood of Quantum Self Hypnosis becoming a movie is slim :-).

CAN YOU BE HYPNOTIZED?

This is a quick quiz I’ve designed to help readers determine if they can be hypnotized.

1. Have you ever started to drift off to sleep in your bed and startled awake?

3. Have you ever almost fallen asleep during a church sermon?
4. Have you ever almost fallen asleep during a class lecture?
5. Have you ever had a hard time shaking off the emotions that you felt during a show or movie after leaving the theater?

And now the good news! If you answered “YES” to 2 or more of the above questions, then you have demonstrated that you can be hypnotized. Hypnosis is really just the ability to let go of the current circumstance and to drop into a deeply relaxed state and you've shown that you can do that. Author Interview with Nikki Polidori: Lamby: A Mother’s Journey Through a Twisted Medical System to Save Her Son

A Conversation with Nikki Polidori, Author of "Lamby: A Mother’s Journey Through a Twisted Medical System to Save Her Son"

Featured Author, Nikki Polidori
Author of Lamby: A Mother's Story Through a Twisted Medical System to Save Her Son

What is your book about?
It is about the struggle of being a parent as well as diagnosing a rare congenital heart defect. It is about never giving up and never letting your child down. It is about our messed up healthcare system and how medicine has become so mechanical that specialists can’t function outside of their specific system. My newborn left the hospital with a barking cough, not normal for anyone let alone an infant. From there, the text book symptoms got worse each week that went by, as my son was misdiagnosed or brushed off. With a list of doctors under our belt before 5 months of age, he had his first surgery to correct the cardiovascular defect. Little did we know that there was more going on…something “someone” forgot to tell us. He struggled to live a normal life and was always sick. Couldn’t play like a normal 3 year old, couldn’t eat well…we started worrying about his future. Then we discovered a problem that was even more rare. What came next was trying to find someone who could fix it; not an easy task when there isn’t even a name for this problem.

Why did you decide to write it?
I had this real life story, which when told to friends or acquaintances, always stimulated a “wow factor”. It usually was the quite abbreviated version but nonetheless a jaw dropping story. I wanted people to know about my son’s condition, to promote awareness, but also to support that a mother’s instinct is an amazing tool that should be listened to more often. I think mother’s have these feelings sometimes and disregard them. And having a little anger left over from the whole thing, I wanted everyone to know about the failed medical system we live in. Being a nurse, it made me even more angry, as I wasn’t completely ignorant to healthcare. That part needed some closure and somewhere maybe at least one of the doctors who failed us will read this book and realize they need to practice medicine better. Then maybe another child won’t have to go through the same hell that my son went through.

How did you get your book published?
I researched publishers as well as spoke to a few people I knew in the business who recommended self-publishing. I found a great company that is totally about customer service and support and they guided me through the whole process, quite painlessly.

What types of readers will be interested in your book?
I would assume parents can relate most to my book but anyone who has ever cared for a loved one who has been ill will have no problem empathizing with the story. It would also be a good read for healthcare practitioners as maybe it can be an eye opener for some of them who don’t usually listen carefully to parents. I think reading this book could help change the way a few doctors practice medicine, ultimately taking better care of their patients.

What is special about your book? What differentiates it from other books in the same category?
As with any memoir, My book is about survival, from a baby’s “point-of-view” as well as that of the parent, for different reasons, of course. It provides medical information for parents struggling to diagnose their child, as well as emphasizes the amazing connection a mother and child has, you know that “gut feeling”; quite a powerful and real thing. What makes it ultimately special is that the story itself is completely real. I lived it, my son lived it. It isn’t fabricated; it isn’t embellished. Although there might be other’s who have experienced a similar situation, a personal story is hard to duplicate and the emotion and experience that a writer describes in their story are distinct and unique.

Have you published any other books? Do you plan to publish more?
This is my first book. I have to say that I have already started thinking of other things to write about. The publishing process was not at all painful and has excited me to pursue other topics and experiences. I also find myself encouraging others, who have mentioned writing a book, to go ahead and just “do it“, because I had such a great experience with self-publishing.

********************

Synopsis:
"Lamby" is a true story of a mother's struggle, with an often twisted health care system, to find out what was causing her infant son to be ill. From the day after his birth, Dylan had a barking cough; not normal for an adult let alone a newborn. With countless trips to multiple pediatricians, as well as a handful of specialists, all within Dylan's first few months of life, Dylan's mother, Nikki, heard conflicting diagnoses. Still nothing the doctors were doing was making her son better. He often stopped breathing, although for only seconds and would barely feed enough to stay hydrated while sometimes vomiting over 30 times in a single day. Nikki used the most powerful tool a parent has to push through the medical system to find an answer. Her background in nursing might have been one component to the nonacceptance of multiple diagnoses, but her intuition led the way, trumping radiologic scans and physician recommendations. The story takes place over the first four years of her son's life, recalling the events of his amazing yet frustrating journey from struggling to eat and breathe to the countless medical errors that occurred at a one of the top-ranked hospitals in this country to the legal cover-up that silently admitted it all; The result being an amazing four year old boy who had a chance to begin a new life after finding his "miracle" in an unexpected place.

5-Star Review: This book is a quick read. I enjoyed the author's humor throughout the struggle to help her son. I was crying before the end, for all the trials and joys of finding an answer. I could relate to the struggle as a parent when we know there is something wrong, but instead are given pat answers. Bravo!
