WHAT IS PTSD? 3 STEPS TO HEALING TRAUMA

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
I am a psychologist focusing on Post-Trauma care in my clinical practice. I have been working with trauma survivors since 1999 and have always wanted to write a book that would be directed toward those I care for in my practice. This book was written with the intention of being practical, easy to read and filled with easy to follow recovery exercises.

Where do you get your ideas?
Working with trauma survivors has been a gift. I try to really listen to what my clients are telling me. When they describe their symptoms, their daily struggles and what helps … I try to strategize about approaches that might help them recover better. I am also trained in many of the current cutting edge approaches for trauma treatment.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
Of course! Who doesn’t? I find that if I write for a little while and then step away from the task and give myself some space then I can return to the paragraph or section with renewed focus, insight and energy.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Focus on your outline first … then fill it in taking your time to get your point across. In the case of writing for a self-help or mental health / wellness audience, I really liked getting feedback from colleagues and peers during the writing process. I was also able to try out every single one of the exercises in the book with real clients in session. If the approach worked well with a number of different clients, with different backgrounds and different trauma histories then it was OK for the book. If not, then it got tossed.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
We have a website (http://www.whatisptsd.com). Also, we try to share the book with those who might benefit. EBSCO (which provides ebooks to libraries across the globe) picked up our book last year, so we hope that many will be able to have access to the book globally as well.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
What a hilarious question! I guess we could ask Kira Knightly to play the therapist and a host of others to play the clients recovering from trauma (i.e., Oprah, Robert Deniro, Nicolas Cage, Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Owen Wilson, Marissa Tomei, Cate Blanchett, Lucy Liu, Sophie Okenedo… etc.) after all, trauma is every person’s story. Recovery is for everyone.
