Author Interview with L.A. White: "The Original Rude Boys' Son?

A Conversation with L.A. White,
Author of "The Original Rude Boys' Son?"

Why do you feel you had to write "The Original Rude Boys' Son"?
I wrote my book, "The Original Rude Boys' Son?" because I like to write and I thought it was a story worth telling.

From where do you get your ideas?
The black experience during 1960s America has been well documented but not so much the black experience during 1960s Britain. In fact, during my ten years living in the States I have realized that a lot of Americans, mainly black Americans are unaware that there are any black people in Britain.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
To all those people who write, I say keep writing and believe in what you are doing and don't give up. Nobody else can tell your story and if you don't tell it, then it dies with you.

If your book was made into a movie, who would play each role?
If my book were to be made into a film (please), I would want my mum to be played by a younger version of Alfre Woodard and my dad by a younger version of Denzel Washington. I could be played by any young up and coming black actor, and my younger brother by an even younger black actor. His role wouldn't be difficult: all he has to do is lie on the settee and sleep. James Earl Jones is my uncle Augustus, and Oprah my aunt Minnie.

About the Author:
This is my first book and I am at work on a sequel, which will be out in the new year, whether or not this one is successful. I moved here from London in 2002. I came to the USA from London, England in 2002, spent five years in Georgia and lately have been living in New York. in the future I would like to divide my time between England and the USA as I miss home but also like America very much. if my book is successful it would go some way to helping me achieve that goal.

The books I read are mainly biography but I also love to read detective fiction. I grew up on the Philip Marlowe books of Raymond Chandler. one day I am going to create a black detective to rival Marlowe because down these mean streets a man must go, a man who is himself not mean. maybe that is what the second installment of "The Original Rude Boys' Son?" is about.
