Author Interview with Michael Signorelli: "A Dollar Store Christmas"

A Conversation with Michael Signorelli
Author of "A Dollar Store Christmas"

Why do you feel you had to write "A Dollar Store Christmas"?

This is an autobiographical narrative. I lived the events described in this story. I felt that people need to hear a message of hope in what can be a very difficult season. The best stories are true! We encounter serendipitous moments on a daily basis. The real question is: Are you paying attention?

From where do you get your ideas?

I draw heavily upon real life events. In college I loved to read autobiographies. The real “magic” is in the possibility that, “it could happen for me too.” As a fatherless boy with four brothers and sisters and a single mother, I wanted to read rags-to-riches stories about men of integrity who overcame great adversity. I drew strength from the triumph.

Do you ever experience writer's block, and how do you overcome it?

I've had brief bouts of writer's block, but something I've learned is to channel new ideas through a process of “freewriting.” I sit down and write whatever comes to mind---without proper punctuation---and many times, any real cohesion. In these sessions I always create a phrase or sentence that breaks the damn loose.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write. Write all the time. Write in your head and on physical paper more than the computer. The tactile experience helps mold ideas. The mental process of forming sentences and whole paragraphs inside of your mind is becoming a lost means of discovery.

How do you market your work? Are some avenues more successful than others?

I market my work primarily through my band's social media presence. Fathom Blue fans follow my narratives through song, so it's not a stretch to cross over from iTunes to Kindle!
