Author Interview with Jeffrey Littorno: Soul Hostage

A Conversation With Jeffrey Littorno,
Author of "Soul Hostage"

"Soul Hostage"

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
Sometimes I just have ideas and bits of stories bouncing around inside my head. I might not even realize just how they are connected until I force myself to sit down at the keyboard and let them out. This story just started as a bit of an idea about captors having the tables turned on them.

Where do you get your ideas?
I don’t think my ideas come from anywhere in particular. Many things pop into my head when I am driving to work or even taking a shower. A memory or thought about something I have seen can blossom into something more. So I guess the best answer to your question is that I get my ideas from everywhere.

Do you ever experience writer’s block and how do you overcome it?
I think I suffer more from writer’s resistance. Once I force myself to sit down at the keyboard and write, the ideas usually find their way out. It might start as a trickle at first, but it usually picks up as I go. If I am working on a novel and having trouble getting started, reading the last ten or fifteen pages written usually gives me a kick.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
Get going! If you just stick with it, you can publish your book. I know that sounds simplistic, but I truly believe that most things are possible if you just have the determination to put in the time. Once you have one published, it just gets easier.

How do you market your work? Have you found some avenues to be more successful than others?
I have to admit that my marketing efforts have been of the shotgun variety. I try a lot of different things. Begging for reviews, offering free copies, writing articles and reviews, participating in a lot of book clubs, blogging, and anything else to get my name out there. So far, I haven’t found anything that has been particularly successful. I just try to keep writing so that I have new books to offer.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Good question! I suppose Ethan Hawke would be great as Thomas. Hawke shows the sort of nuance that I would like for the character. For Joey, John Leguizamo plays hot heads very well. And for Lou Stoaffer, it has to be Jack Nicholson. That would definitely be the perfect cast for the film version of Soul Hostage.
