Beautiful Things and How to Ignore Them, by Sam Kuban

Beautiful Things and How to Ignore Them, by Sam Kuban
This collection of poems details the demise of thirteen townspeople, all of whom are as unpleasant and undesirable as the death through which they suffer. If you are loving, hopeful, calm, and happy, and are looking for a read that will reflect any one of those qualities, then this book is most definitely not for you. Continue your browse. However, if you find it soothing to laugh at the misfortune, embarrassment, and humiliation of others, and if you chuckle at the thought of unjustified death, then this book might put a smirk on your cheek.

A Story of Life, by Peter Schneider

"A Story of Life" is a richly layered fable about a young girl’s coming of age as she experiences the transformation of society’s innocence.

Karmen enjoys a peaceful childhood on a small island, whose sky, like her demeanor, is a pristine blue with never a cloud in sight. Her reality takes a sudden turn when it is revealed she is a Bringer of Life. Though she must leave home, she embraces the responsibility to use her power for the greater good. As the years pass, new growth and beauty are left in the wake of her constant travels.

One day, Karmen risks her life for love and nearly dies. The consequences of her choice force her from the sanctuary she helped to create. After an awakening, she exists in a harsh civilization where innocence is but a distant memory. Will she be able to adapt to her new surroundings? Or will she perish along with the splendor she once knew?

"A Story of Life" is brought to you by Mobile Poetry, a company dedicated to publishing quality content optimized for reading on mobile devices.

I can't begin to tell how this book has impressed me. In less than 6 thousand words, the author was able to give many important messages, and it's so beautifully written. He is a natural storyteller. This is not, however, like the many other books you've read. It will get you thinking, and it's likely going to change you, as it did to me. Everyone should read "A Story Of Life." After all, a bit of intelligent fun never hurt anyone. Amazing book. ~Giselly Lillmans, Smashwords

Book excerpts
Chapter 34
After many summers, she felt her appearance change, and the sisters prepared her ceremony for the big change. She was about to become a woman. She was rolled into the leaves, and the sisters softly let her down on the ocean floor. While she sank down, her consciousness slowly faded away, but she wasn’t worried. She heard them sing in her head and she knew she was safe. Winter came and went.

Chapter 37
She read the strange signs, and the first cloud in a long time appeared on the blue sky. Slowly the boats turned and set sail home, or the place which once had been her home.

Tales of the Anywhere Ship (Volume One): "The Shrew in the Shoe with Nothing to Do", by Kristopher Michael

Tales of the Anywhere Ship (Vol 1.): "The Shrew in the Shoe with Nothing to Do" is the first installment of a series written by Kristopher Michael.

In this book the reader is introduced to the inventor (and captain) of the "Anywhere Ship"... Professor James Ian Patterson, and his second in command, Pip (the parrot). After a brief introduction the Professor and Pip give the reader (their newest recruit) a tour of the ship while explaining how it came to be, and as usual while visiting with the Professor, he takes out one of his favorite storybooks to tell a rhyming tale (in this case about a shrew who learns a valuable lesson regarding friendship); for the Professor believes greatly in the observation of a good tale to find the meaning(s) behind them.

Your journey with the Professor and Pip has just begun! Each book is written as a continuing and involving conversation/shared experience between the characters and the reader, giving children the opportunity to learn and laugh alongside the Professor and Pip, as they share inspiring tales, interesting facts and even "how-tos" spanning a wide variety of subject matter.

From the back cover:

Professor James Ian Patterson (otherwise known as "Professor Jip") is a man of science, culture, invention and storytelling. Pip (the professor's most valued and trusted parrot companion) is an artist, puzzle maker and scribe to their quests. Together they journey for knowledge, adventure and inspiration; welcome aboard "The Anywhere Ship"!

About the Author:
Though not a classically trained author, Kristopher Michael’s interest in writing was suddenly and unexpectedly sparked while making a joke with a friend; what followed was a list of rhyming moral-based stories that would be told by “Professor Jip” and his parrot friend “Pip”, in the “Tales of the Anywhere Ship” series.

A native of Newfoundland, Canada, he currently resides in The Netherlands.

Kindle Spotlight: A Collection of Thoughts & Too Much Time, by Danny Blaszczyk

"A Collection of Thoughts and Too Much Time" is simply that: a collection of thoughts and too much time!

I would like to be clever, but I am not. I would like to be talented, but I am not. I would like to be wealthy, but it will never happen. I just simply exist in much the same way as everyone else and I see and experience what others do. Yet life is simply a series of snapshots, with each ‘snap’ a particular event. I have tried to capture some of these events, not using a camera or mobile phone, but rather, to express my feelings and thoughts about them. Clearly, I have also had far too much time on my hands!

I dedicate this collection to my family, because they are long suffering. I particularly dedicate this work to my grandchildren, as some of this is about them and some of this is a reaction to the world I see them growing up in.

I sincerely hope you enjoy reading this work and that, in some manner, it sparks thought and debate. Thank you.

Author Interview with Thomas L. Vaultonburg: Submerged Structure

Why did you feel you had to tell this story?
Most of the poems in the book tell a self-contained story about a small snippet of experience from a life. Maybe just an image that moved me to pick up the pen, but sometimes something that was buried deep-down for a long time, something I worked hard to locate and bring to the surface. Thus the title, Submerged Structure.

Where do you get your ideas?
I've been writing poetry for thirty years now, and I almost never have tried to write a poem. All I do is make myself available and wait for the poems to find me. So, the ideas (poems) come from everywhere, usually something more simple or unpoetic than I would have considered if I sat down and actually tried to think of something worthy of writing a poem about.

Do you ever experience writer's block and how do you overcome it?
No, because I never try to write. Similarly, because I consider writing to be the experience of making oneself available to write I feel I am always writing in some way. Putting words to paper or a computer screen may be the end result of that process, but I think there are numerous steps that precede picking up the pen, and I think I'm always in that state. I may only manage to get 20-25 poems to the page every year now, but I'm always a poet.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers on the writing and publishing process?
I normally wouldn't. If you're going to survive the brutality of wanting to be a poet and the crippling rejection, nothing I'm going to say will make a difference. But if I did have something to say it might be forget publishing until you have something ready to publish. I might even go further than that and say forget writing until you've read everything worth reading. I published a book of poetry when I was 18, which was still rare at the time because this was before internet printing, and I regret it. Keep your early work close to you for a while. Read, read, read.

If your book was made into a movie, who do you picture playing each part?
Because it's a book of poems, I envision a Raymond Carver "Short Cuts"/Robert Altman cast of bizarre and off beat characters playing the various parts. Of course Steve Buscemi must be in there.

Synopsis
"There's a road sign, or was as of three years ago when the picture on the cover of the book was taken, between Byron and Oregon Illinois. The sign reads Submerged Structure, warning those who might be tempted to dive in to the water of the Rock River that something unseen is resident beneath the murky water. I grew up driving past that sign quite frequently, and each time I passed it the words seemed to become more and more personal to me. I would often wonder how many signs like this in the entire world there were. Not many I concluded. Maybe not even any. Maybe it's the only one in the entire world. What lurks beneath the water there? I've never known. But to me it seemed like a perfect metaphor for those of us who suffer from Schizoid Personality Disorder. Except in our case there's no sign we can plant in the ground to warn others. Even if there were it would be virtually impossible to explain that some part of us has broken off and submerged deep inside our psyche, and is either just gone or nearly impossible to get to. Nearly impossible."
